January 28, 2008
Yeah, we heard about President Hinkley's passing at about 9:30 pm
Central Daylight, just shortly after we reported our key indicators.
It's been a bunch of ups and downs this week. We got some cool media
referrals that are way awesome. Charlotte and Alan were talking to a
friend or neighbor, when the conversation turned to politics. They
mentioned they were thinking about voting for Mitt Romney, and their
friend said not to, because Mormons are going to Hell. Well, Alan
didn't really appreciate that, because he had some Mormon neighbors
where he grew up in Alabama, and he didn't think that they seemed
like the kind of people that would be going to Hell. His wife got
interested, and was checking out the Book of Mormon online, but it
was hurting her eyes, so when she realized she could order one for
free online, she signed up for it. They're way open and really cool.
Rebecca has been out of church for a while, and wanted to get back
in, so she requested a Bible. We went by one night and talked to her
fiance Kyle, and he mentioned a question about marrying someone who
is divorced. We setup an appointment and said we'd bring something
that could answer their question, and were able to later teach them
about the Restoration. They thought it was pretty cool. We tried to
watch Elder Oak's talk on divorce from the April 07 General
Conference, but their Playstation wouldn't read it. Their question
was whether or not marrying a divorced person is considered
committing adultery, because Rebecca was in a bad marriage for 10
years and then got a divorce. In Matthew, Christ says that anyone who
marrys anyone who is divorced is committing adultery, but Elder Oaks
says in his talk that because of the wickedness of this generation,
the Lord has allowed it. So I told them what Elder Oaks said, and the
next day we stopped by and gave them a copy of his talk from the
Ensign, and they said that they were getting married in about 5
hours. So, they're pretty cool.
David Shelby didn't come to church, and he wasn't able to go to
Jennifer Rackley's baptism, because just as he was getting ready, his
mom called and said that his dad was in the hospital. So they were
going to head out to the hospital in Springfield, MO. Elder Gregory
and I found it quite interesting that when someone is investigating
the church and wants to do all these things, like go to church, there
always ends up being other things that pop up. I think it's for two
reasons: 1) Satan is trying to prevent them from going, and 2) God is
giving them a trial to have them decide if they really are going to
follow Christ or not, and go to church, even if it means leaving your
dad in the hospital, or your brother without a ride. Heading towards
baptism is not an easy experience, because suddenly everything comes
your way, and you have all these excuses to not do something that
brings you closer. Salvation is not a cheap experience. The Atonement
was not easy for Christ, so why should getting to the Celestial
Kingdom be easy for us? God wants to know what we're going to
sacrifice for it.
Elder Gregory and I have to get ready for next Sunday, because we're
teaching a combined Priesthood about Preach My Gospel, and how
members can be more missionary minded and help us out. We've got a
lot of planning to do. The last time I did something like this was in
Springdale, and then we had three companionships. Here there's just
us. It's going to be interesting.
I found a member in the ward who thinks I'm related to her. Her name
is Patricia Guest. Her fathers last name was Van Price, and he was
from Laketown. We'll find out. I keep forgetting to take my pedigree
chart to church.
I'd better get going. See you all next week!
