I asked Brady a few questions last night. Most of this letter is in response. Dad
We go to a public library on Preparation Day to use our e-mail.
President Seal gave us a paper stating some required registration
stuff in order to use the website. I think it's only for use by
missionaries, as we were given a password that was required in order
to register for an e-mail address.
As for food, I don't seem to like cereal or burritos anymore. I don't
know why. For breakfast I've been having a Golden Delicious apple
(mixing it up with the occasional Granny Smith) every morning. I'm
trying to get some creamed honey for sandwiches for lunch (lately
it's been just a banana though), and dinner is whatever's available,
but typically we eat at a member's house. Oh, and last week, I found
starfruit and a tamarind at Wal-Mart. The starfruit was pretty good.
It tasted like a mix between a pineapple and an orange. I haven't
tried the tamarind yet, I've been asking some of the hispanic members
here what to do with it. I may be having some genuine tamarindo!
Sweet!
For thanksgiving, we ate with the Kruzkopps, a member family. We were
invited by an investigator named April, but the Kruzkopps were on the
Dinner Calendar we handed out, but we visited her later on in the
day. After lunch we played some Catch Phrase, and then left a
spiritual thought. We just took it easy most of the day, because
President Seal told us not to go tracting on Thanksgiving, Christmas
Eve and Christmas, and around New Years. Quite honestly, I don't
really want to, as if I were having Christmas dinner and someone
knocked on my door, I'd be pretty irritated.
I bought a bike at Wal-Mart. I used my ECCU card. I'm not sure if
I'll be biking in Springdale, but if I do, I've got one. I asked
President Seal (he was here for interviews last District Meeting)
what the plan was for Springdale, and it looks like I'll be here for
4.5 months, and then go to Springdale, and be with Elder Jaynes for 6
to 9 months. After that, I'll be paired with another missionary to
help them learn Marshallese, and then I'll go back to English
proselyting elsewhere (I suspect I'll have two areas between
Springdale and the end of my mission). I'm not sure about the
distribution of the Marshallese people in Springdale. I hope they
don't have big hills like I hear they do in Fayetteville (like
USU-sized ones).
Just send everything to the mission office (and yeah, I'll take a
calling card). That way, it'll get to me no matter where I am. And,
what is this about an AFCU check or refund or card or something? I'm
not sure what's going on. I have no use for a check card, so if it's
that, I'd suggest just throwing it into a box with my stuff
(preferably the brown one that was in the metal closet), since I
don't have much money in my account to use, but will in a couple of
years....
My clothes are doing well. Well, the Missionary Mall suit is having
trouble with the buttons (mostly the pants -- one's almost fallen
off). The shoes feel fine, but my feet are moving a bit too much in
them, so I might end up getting a blister at some point. Ah well.
We're supposed to wear suits (meaning the jacket) from Nov 1 to Mar
1. Luckily, because of the oddly hot weather here, the president
extended it to Nov 15th, but that time has passed. Oh yeah, I lost
one of my nametags yesterday. :-(
Let's see, more about my companion. Elder Morrill is from Roosevelt
(well, near there, like I'm from Price), and he goes home in about 2
months (10 more Saturdays). He's getting a bit trunky, but staying
focused. He loves sports: baseball, basketball, and football. His
favorite college football team is U of U, which he hopes to attend
after he gets home. I've been hearing him sing "Renegade" by Styx
lately. I've been mostly having Beatles stuck in my head every once
in a while. I miss playing the guitar mostly. Ah well.
Apparently we're having some good success. We've been teaching about
19 lessons a week, and have quite a few potential investigators. We
talked to a cool guy named Johnny Moore, who wants to quit smoking,
so we taught him the Stop Smoking Workshop, and he's been trying it
for two days. He hasn't made it a full 24 hours without smoking yet,
but it looks like he's doing pretty well, and he's still going for it.
I've sent some letters home: one to Nick and Liz (a birthday card),
and one to Heather Faussett. Please see that they get them. So,
Darrin and Mandy are going to build a house on the other side of Utah
Lake, eh? Sounds cool. Oh, and there's a Bradshaw family here in the
Fort Smith 2nd Ward. I met Bro. Bradshaw. He's a bit shorter than me,
but has red hair (shifty eyes). I'm not sure if we're related or not.
I've got that Pedigree chart, maybe we'll have to compare both of
ours one of these Sundays....
Anyway, I don't know what I really need for Christmas. In the way of
Marshallese books, I'm just going to do some inter-library loans and
see if they can help me. President Seal has offered to purchase a
couple of copies of some that I've found (like a Marshallese
Dictionary, and one called "Spoken Marshallese"). If you buy and send
me anything, go with the "Spoken Marshallese" book. It's about $25
(the cheapest one; the dictionary's about $50). The ISBN is:
0870220705. It would also be helpful if you looked up "Marshallese"
at Wikipedia.org, and printed out the article and sent it to me.
Be sure to let me know who I have for Christmas.
I'd send you pictures, but these computers don't have an
easy-to-reach USB port, and I'm not taking many photos anyway.
I'll probably just wait until my card gets full, go to Wal-Mart
and burn it on a CD, and then I'll be able to send you stuff with
that. Well, I'd better get going. Talk to ya next week!
