Synopsis: Wow! Eight movies. It wasn't even really that hard. Andrew showed up at my place at about 10AM so we could get snacks and Krispy Kremes. He was going to show up at 9:30AM, but he decided to keep his Movie Day tradition of always being late alive. Oh yeah, Movie Day emerged from the Blackout of 2003 unscathed. We were not only able to get ALL of our movies, thanks to a last minute call from me to Andrew (who picked up movies # 5, 7, and 8), but we were also able to start on time with all the requisite snacks at my house. Our start was a few minutes late, due to me and Andrew ordering custom Movie Day shirts online at T-shirts.com.
This was the first Movie Day in which one of our movies, Orgazmo was NOT rented from Blockbuster (I got it right after the power came back on at the Video Room). Orgazmo was also the first NC17 movie ever on Movie Day. Once again, we start Movie Day off with a truly great "Movie-Day-Movie." If it hadn't been for the Video Room, we may have had to use our alternate, Corky Romano. Orgazmo went off without a hitch. Chris attended this movie, but left before Shanghai Noon. Chris also ordered his own special Movie Day T-shirt after Orgazmo.
Since we were running late, we went pretty much right to Shanghai Noon. Lekeith showed up a few minutes into the movie. Shanghai Noon Also went quite smoothly and was an easy watch. All of our movies this year, except for Marathon Man were almost exactly 90 minutes long, which is why we were able to do 8 so easily.
We skipped break as best we could to make up for lost time. Next was Night of the Living Dead Andrew and I both crossed our fingers and hoped that curse of Black-and-White movies on Movie Day wouldn't continue. We had had severe problems with Black-and-white movies on past Movie Days with films such as Lord of the Flies and Plan 9 From Outer Space. It seemed that the curse would continue as we failed to be amused with the first half of the movie (Lekeith fell asleep). However, the second half of the movie picked up quite nicely, and so, perhaps, the curse was broken. The damage had been done though, and my move to seperate this movie from Marathon Man to avoid slowdown seemed to be a good one.
Even though we were behind schedule still, we had to take a break to recoup from movie #3. We went outside and walked to the park and back. We met Chris and his current girlfriend in the lobby and went up for The Scorpion King, a truly great pick for movie day. This movie moved. The pace was good, and the opening was excellent. However, the Rock did not kick anywhere near as much ass in the rest of the movie as he did in the opening sequence.
We made the executive decision to do dinner after Marathon Man since it was a Saturday and we wanted to try and shave off a few minutes to make up for lost time. Marathon Man was a good movie, and it didn't lag too much. However, we didn't get stuff very well for the first part since we really needed to pay attention (this is typically the case for our "good movie"). It did move pretty well though. And then we cabed and bused over to Ollies. We actually ended up losing time at dinner, since we tried to pick up 40s and save money by walking to 86th and Broadway to take the bus. It turned out that "Cheaps," the bodega near Collegiate, where we used to buy beer from in high-school, had closed, and so had the bodega near the M86 stop. So we had to go to our usual place to get the customary Malt Liquor on the East Side. 40s of COLT45, oh baby!
We were ASS-late now, so we started Money Talks at 11:00PM in hopes of finishing by 3:30AM with all 8 movies. We agreed that we would most likely never see 8 movies again, and that 7 should probably be the cap. For Money Talks we had some technical difficulties. The video plug kept coming loose, and we had to tredge on despite not being able to read necessary plot-revealing subtitles. Also, Joe, who was supposed to come at 11AM, but had work, called during the movie to say he was on his way, which we couldn't stop the movie for. Money Talks was not what we expected, but we did get the classic "How bout some Colt, fohty-five!" line, which was all we really wanted anyway. I was getting sleepy. Lekeith was getting restless. Andrew was getting none. Joe came near the end of the movie.
Next came another bit of a dissapointment. The Crocodile Hunter was not as good as his T.V. show. All the best, organic parts were left out, and all that was left in was "Hollywood-ized." Plus there was this awful, dry FBI/CIA part of the plot which we couldn't follow, and didn't want to. "Why aren't they in Australia yet?" I cried out during the third and fourth scenes at the FBI/CIA headquarters. Lisa Schwartzbaum of EW gave this movie a B+, further proving that she is a moron. Andrew Davidson opted to buy this movie instead of renting it, further proving that he is a moron. On to BOOZE and movie #8!
Corky Romano was not as bad as I thought it would be. I almost thought it was good, and definitely felt it was funny at times. The Colt 45 tasted like vomit without the chunks, since it had probably been sitting in the bodega for a month or two, as it typically does. Andrew downed his first, followed later by Lekeith, and soon after (right before the movie ended) me. My favorite part was a coked up Chris Kattan, which I know sounds redundant.
Movie Day 2003 officially ended with the end of Corky Romano at 3:47AM. If all had gone perfectly, it would have ended at about 2:30AM. Blake and Andrew saw eight movies. Lekeith saw seven movies. Chris saw three movies and Joe saw three movies. Andrew later returned because he forgot his phone. Andrew LATER returned because he forgot his shoes and his socks. Andrew was quite wasted. HAPPY MOVIE DAY 2003!
