One

How did we two
ever become one?
The way you slurp your coffee
drives me crazy, the way you
chew your nails makes
the dead scream Mercy,
yet one smile from your eyes
and I forget.

Youve given me
too many sleepless nights.
But just when Im ready
to blot out your buzz saw snore,
with a diabolical meeting
of my elbow and your ribs,
you turn, smile, and gently
whisper my name.

I need water wings when
I dive into the bathroom
after youve showered.
Later we talk; my head swims
with the depth of your questions.
No-one has wanted to know me
like you do. I ask why.
I need no answer.

I flash red and green sparks
when women flirt with you,
you love it, you light up,
you take the fantasy and
roll it between smooth
impersonal sheets. Yet
Ive never trusted anyone
the way I trust you.

I cannot imagine a day
without you in it,
you are always
in my thoughts.
