Liquid Memory
By
Jennifer Crow

Liquid memory whispers promises:
recapture lost youth or win
the vagrant heart again,
stand once more on foreign shores
or card the wool of forgetfulness
and spin times dementia
into a more satisfying tapestry.

Two drops before bedtime:
slightly bitter on the tongue,
but not so much as the mind
clenched like a fist, searching
for a wayward face or the last line
of a song. I can taste yesterday
when I swallow, hold my breath
against the rush of the past
as a hundred passions and pains
whirl under my skin.

I remember you under the stars
your hands a slow symphony,
your eyes dark as wells.
I remember you, though
we never really met,
and your lips taste
like liquid memory.
