One-Sentence Stories People sit in a circle and in turn say one sentence that then forms a story. You could also have 'one-word story' or 'carry-on story', in which the person talks for about 30 seconds.
Excuse Me! This is done in groups of about eight. Get the group to sit in a circle. with a leader in the middle. One person starts to tell a story untill the leader says "Excuse me". The leader must then choose another person from the circle to continue the story. The leader can change the storyteller at any time (even mid-sentence!)
Fortunately/Unfortunately This works best with odd numbers. The first person starts with a statement such as "one day the dog decided to go for a walk". The next person in the circle continues the story starting their sentence with fortunately, eg "Fortunately the dog had a jumper on". The next person continues thje story starting their sentence with the word unfortunately, eg "Unfortunately it was a really hot day". The story continues with each sentence alternating fortunatley/unfortunately.
Embelish the Sentence This game can be done in pairs or small groups. One person starts by saying a simple sentence such as "The dog barked". The next person needs to add something to the sentence, such as "The dog barked continuously". The next person continues adding, such as "Last night the dog barked continuously". The group can add any words or phrase to any part of the sentence but they cannot change what is allready there...only add!
Sound Story A sound story is an episodic cumulative tale with sounds and actions that the audience can participate in. Get the group to come up with a cumulative tale, usually it involves someone going on a journey, they come acrross different tasks/trials, achieve their goal and then they go back home past all the tasks again. Once the story is written come up with actions and sounds for the repeated words. Tell the story with the group all participating by doing the actions.
Storytelling will enrapture children. They will also love creating their own stories!
