"ONLY ORIGINALS"

Here I am standing beside four of my pressed floral paintings in a beautiful little store in a converted mill called "ONLY ORIGINALS" in St. Jacobs, Ontario.  This a quaint little village that is famous for its quilts and crafts stores and home made baked goods.  Thousands of tourists visit St. Jacobs every year from all over the world, and I am honoured to be able to display and sell my work at this venue.    It features works from many different  artisans from watercolours to pottery and stained glass.  I am happy to say I am the only artist displayed with pressed flowers.  I also have displayed some of my bookmarks in a wicker basket.  I hope to have more of my work added to this group.
I had a lovely 8 x 10 frame which reminded me of athenian sculpture, so I tried to do a picture that would also compliment the frame and visa versa.  The vase is made out of a fabric wallpaper with a guilded look and really picks up the colours in the frame.  I felt this picture needed a very simple design, nothing too fussy and I really like the way it turned out.  The little butterfly's wings are a side view of the  poached egg flower and the antennae are from the back part of  Queen Anne's lace.  They just about flew away on me!  The lacy leaf at the top is a weed, but very delicate.

The flowers in the vase are comprised of  trailing ivy, forget me nots, lobelia, alyssum, hydrangea, queen anne's lace and two flowers of which I am not sure of their names.  The little pink flower is from California.

The table top is made up of very thin pieces of forget-me- not stems and the flower on the table is also a forget-me-not.
I used to play the violin and always wondered how I could turn a music staff into a floral painting.  Well, this is the result!
I used thin strips of white paper to make the musical lines and it took me a while to figure out what I could use to make the treble clef.  I finally came up with the idea of using pieces of lacy dusty miller and arranged the design.  This was mighty tricky, especially on the black felt background  because once you laid the pieces down before gluing they gripped to the felt and it wasn't easy to move them around or they broke into pieces.  The notes were a lot of fun to do and the lilac larkspur, daisy, yellow pansy, purple larkspur and pink larkspur became the notes "D, F,B,C and F!"
I used wintered grasses for the stems of the notes.   A touch of ivy was used to dress up the treble clef.  The finished piece will be single matted in the grey green of the ivy and the mat will be scribed.  The frame is wood but painted a dull silver which really picks up the colours in the dusty miller.
"Sing Along"
To the right is another bouquet style picture.  I got the inspiration from a bridesmaid's bouquet.  The flowers consist of small rose leaves which border the perimeter of the arrangement, and in between these are pieces of alyssum and blue forget- me nots.  The rest of the arrangement is made up of deep pink and burgundy miniature roses and in the centre blue/violet larkspur.  The stems are made out of weathered grasses that have been stripped to look like stems.  The finishing touch was the bow which is made out of lace ribbon.  The background again is black felt. I love it because it has such a rich texture and the flowers stick to it even sometimes without glue.
