Beijing: Summer Palace

In my opinion, Summer Palace was the most beautiful of all the places we visited in Beijing. Summer Palace is a huge royal garden which began with one imperial palace about 800 years ago. Today, Summer Palace is now home to palace temples, beautiful gardens, pavillions, and a huge man-made lake.

A mother lion plays with her baby. Their job is to ward off evil spirits.

The Hall of Benevolence and Longevity was where the emperor dealt with state affairs.

This mythical animal is here to protect the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity.

Looking up at the ceiling of the walkway

There are about 8000 paintings on the ceiling of the Long Corridor, which is a 728 meter long walkway
along the lake. The paintings include images of folk tales, battle scenes, landscapes, and animals.

An even closer close-up of the painting

A stage on which performances once took place for the emperor
to watch as he ate his meals (they didn't have TV back then)
