Phillip Magee

PHILIP MAGEE was born ca 1768-1770 in Duplin County, North Carolina, died 21 Feb 1826 in Jaynesville, Mississippi (1 Feb 1826 Covington County, Mississippi) and is buried in the Jaynesville Cemetery, Simpson County, Mississippi. He married on 15 Jun 1787 in Sampson County, North Carolina to Mary (Polly) Butler, daughter of John Butler and Jane Scott. Mary is buried in the Robert Magee Cemetery, Jaynesville Cemetery, Simpson or Covington County, Mississippi.

Phillip and his family moved from North Carolina and, for a short time, lived in that part of the Mississippi Territory now known as Alabama near old Fort St. Stephens. Around 1811 they moved and settled on the Big Goodwater near present day Magee, Mississippi in Simpson County (later known as Coats) which was Marion County when it was formed in 1811 until Simpson County was formed in 1824. Lowry and McCardle's History of Mississippi says Phillip settled on the Big Goodwater and that he was one of the earliest settlers of Simpson County. It was said that Phillip was an educated man and that he wrote in a beautiful hand.

Phillip Magee served for North Carolina in the War of 1812 - DAR Index.
