Fieldtrip, Part Three
By the time lunch was finished, it was about quarter of two,
and the laser show was about to start. The Dean herded his
students into the arena and they all took places around the
large pit that housed the laser generator. Miki and Jury
wandered in behind them as the lights dimmed. As the show
began, Katie found herself standing next to Akio. He slid his
hand in her pocket and retrieved the T.A.D.P., studying it
curiously.
"Just how does this thing work?"
After getting over the initial shock of having Akio's hand
in her pocket, Katie pointed to one of the buttons. "Well,
you press this and--" Before she could finish her sentance, one
of the lasers bounced off the reflective metal wall of the
pit. It fizzled through the air and made direct contact with the
mechanism that Akio held in his hand. Purple threads of electricity
scorched the air around the T.A.D.P., causing Akio to drop it,
swearing. In the air next to the shuddering contraption, a
black circle of empty space opened, edged with static blue
flames.
On the other side of the crowd, Utena looked over.
"What's going on? Is this part of the laser show?"
From atop her back, Wakaba shook her ponytailed head.
"I dunno. It looks kind of dangerous..." There was a
large commotion coming from the area where a split had
opened in the dimensional barrier, and suddenly a frightened-looking
young boy in a plug suit shoved through the crowd, with Katie
hot on his heels.
"Oh, crud! Shinji, wait!"
They were followed by two females in similar costume, one
with short, pale blue hair who looked as if strange things
like this happened to her every other day. The other, whose
hair was long and red, spotted Miki and (much to the ire
of his sister) ran over to snuggle him.
"Oooh, you're so kawaii!!"
Miki blushed pinkly.
Akio stared at the hole, perplexed, as a dark-haired young
man came tumbling out, followed by two women in rather revealing
costumes. One had a whip; the other, a wire. They were pursued by
the dark-haired man's very effeminate brother and a
hulking blond guy. Akio followed, duly interested.
Back on Utena's side of the arena, the students watched the
procedings with fascination. The afforementioned dark-haired
man sidled up to Jury, introduced himself as "Carrot", and
began hitting on her. After minutes of smalltalk, and the
railing Jury was clutching practically writhing in agony,
the orange-haired woman turned to her suitor and fairly screamed,
"I'm a lesbian, okay?! Get the hell away from me!!"
Touga and Saionji had caught up with Carrot's brother.
"So, what did you say your name was?"
"Marron. Marron Glac�."
Touga put an arm around his shoulders. "Well, Marron. How
would you like to come to a meeting of ours? A kind of... photo shoot,
if you will?"
Back at the T.A.D.P., what looked like a cross between a cat
and an elf with a very high voice barrelled out of the
portal in pursuit of a red-haired British man.
"Lyle! Lyyyyyle! Wait for meee!"
A blonde woman launching fireballs followed seconds later,
shrieking in a warlike manner. "Get back here, you
stupid little Wiggan! What makes you think Lyle would ever
go for a girl with fangs?"
A dark-haired, tom-boyish girl (who looked rather exasperated)
and another brawny blond guy brought up the rear of that party.
In the middle of the crowd, James was confused and a little
frightened by all the chaos. He suddenly felt a hand on
his shoulder, and turned to see a tall, white-haired
man in red and black.
"Have you ever ridden in a convertable?"
With Jury's help, Carrot, the two women, and the blond had been thrown
back into the portal. Touga and Saionji reluctantly let Marron
join them. Katie waved her arms as the trail of Ruin Explorers
ran by.
"Lyle! Over here!" The Prince turned in her direction and lept
through the portal, Fam and the others following behind. Katie
sighed dreamily. "He's so... British..."
The T.A.D.P., as if with a mind of its own, closed after the
last escapee had been rounded up. Katie picked the console up
and pocketed it. The lights suddenly went up to reveal: Utena, Anthy,
and Wakaba looking confused; Jury looking extremely pissed;
Miki looking embarrased; Kozue looking protective; Shiori
looking characteristicly blank; Touga and Saionji looking a
bit crestfallen; and Akio carrying James in his arms.
Katie stalked over to the Dean and yanked James away from
him.
"Mine."
Akio sighed. He never got to have any fun.
