eKsperim[E]nto Filmfest Announces More Than 100% Increase In Submissions; Main Festival Postponed
January 10, 2004 (Manila, Philippines) The Sining-X Art Collective, the organizers of the Philippines most underrated and most promising film festival, the eKsperim[E]nto Film & Video Festival announced today that the main festival opening date was moved from February 27, 2004 to March 12, 2004 to give way to Cinema Paraiso, a project of the Committee on Cinema of the National Commission for Culture & the Arts. Cinema Paraiso screenings are held at the Tanghalang Leandro V. Locsin, the same venue as that of eKsperim[E]nto.

The decision was made after Festival Director Elvert de la Cruz Baares talked with Ms. Josephine Atienza, the Project Coordinator and Programmer of Cinema Paraiso.  Baares emphasized the importance of giving way to activities of the same nature.

The 4th eKsperim[E]nto Film & Video Festival will now run from
March 12, 2004 to March 19, 2004, making the main festival an eight-day affair.  This will be the longest main festival ever staged by eKsperim[E]nto since it started in 2000.

The fourth edition also boasts of more than 100% increase in film and video submissions from around the world; an increase in curated international programs; and, more filmmakers in focus.  Compared to last years 200 plus submissions, we received a whopping total of 424 films and videos for our fourth edition the most number of declared short film submission in any film festival in the Philippines ever!  Bottomline, this years festival is history in the making.  eKsperim[E]nto has received submissions from countries like Uganda, Russia, Czech Republic, Portugal, Switzerland, Iran, United Kingdom, Australia, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, Germany, Mexico, United States of America, Spain and Canada.

The 424 submissions will be trimmed down and divided into categories by a five-member Preliminary Jury, separate from the International Jury who will choose the final winners.  The five member preliminary jury will be announced on February 5, 2004 together with the announcement of the festivals Official Selections.

eKsperim[E]nto has established itself as a festival that gives recognition to non-mainstream films that are, later on, collecting awards from other film festivals around the world.  eKsperim[E]nto was proud to be the first ever festival in the world to award Just a Little Bit Of Love by Peter Foott of Ireland, our winner for the Grand Jury Prize for Best Short Fiction Film last year (2003). The same film, after winning at eKsperim[E]nto, went on collecting awards and citations including a nomination for the prestigious BBCs Film Talent of the Year Award.

Another film that was given recognition at last years eKsperim[E]nto, Basal Banar by Auraeus Solito (Philippines), co-winning the Best Filipino Film in the Festival, went on to be shortlisted for competition at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival and the Ghilava Film Festival.  The eKsperim[E]nto Award for Basal Banar was its first ever award from any film festival.

Our list of awarded films doesnt end with the two mentioned but it seems that more films will be vying for eKsperim[E]ntos Grand Jury Prizes for this year.  If the entries this year all seem to be the best in their categories, eKsperim[E]nto is not bothered because this years Board of Jury will consist of a formidable team who will select the international juried winners.  The Board of Jury will be formally announced on February 20, 2004.
