Sigma Alpha Iota was founded June 12, 1903 at the University School of Music in Ann Arbor, Michigan, by Elizabeth Campbell, Frances Caspari, Minnie Davis Sherrill, Mary Storrs Andersen, Nora Crane Hunt, Leila Farlin Laughlin, and Georgina Potts. Their purpose was to foster interest in music and promote social contact among musicians. In August of 2001 there were 191 college chapters and 114 alumnae chapters containing 7,805 active, dues-paying members. Since 1903 Sigma Alpha Iota has initiated 96,083 members. Its colors are crimson and white and its flower is the red rose. |
