The answer lies in introspection of the human species today. Cows and other animals are slaughtered for food on a shockingly large scale. While hunger is prevalent in some parts of the world, a large portion of grains and other plant food grown is being used to feed factory-farmed animals which are then cruelly slaughtered for food. Those grains could be used to feed humans instead of raising animals artificially. Mankind sees the reaction to its cruel ways in the form of miseries. This is the law of karma, God's law.
We are NOT being grateful to God, WHO LOVES US THE MOST, for giving us the opportunity to be human and humane.
It is a horrifying , unjust , violent offense to animals... especially to Cows, in return for being our SACRED MOTHERS and providing us with milk - which gives vitamin B-12 needed for a healthy nervous system. No other animal protein is necessary.
The human birth is the only opportunity for enlightenment, elevation of consciousness, liberation from the cycle of birth and death and entering the Kingdom of God and His Love.
Eating meat means supporting the slaughterhouses. That takes one away from the true nature of the soul.
The kind Lord gives us free will and numerous choices. Its upto us to make the right choice
Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita "You are your own friend and your own foe".
If we make wrong choices, we bear the consequences.
Just as slavery seems outrageous today but was a way of life for some years ago, COW SLAUGHTER is outrageous but a sad reality which needs to change.
