HIS UNCLE JOSEPH GELB WORE A HAT, TOWARDS THE MIDDLE OF THE PICTURE. JOSEPH’S DAUGHTER, TILLIE, IS THE LAST ONE SEATED ON THE RIGHT. ELIAS, HENRY’S FATHER, IS ON THE FAR RIGHT. TILLIE’S BROTHER, GUSSIE PRINCE, IS THE 2ND FROM THE RIGHT. TILLIE’S SON, ARTHUR, IS KNEELING IN THE CENTER. PLEASE HELP TO IDENTIFY EVERYONE ELSE IN THIS PICTURE.
I can trace our Gelb family to two brothers, Avram Gelb, born in 1842, and his younger brother, Aaron Baer Gelb, born in 1848. The Gelbs lived in a cluster of small villages - Onyck, Nagyszollos (also called Navojselo), Salish (Sevlesh in Hebrew), Medzilaborce and Hummene (Today both are in Zemplen County, Slovakia.), Munkacs (Mukachevo), Nagysollous (Vinogradov), Sarospotak, and Chust - in what used to be the northeastern part of Hungary. At the conclusion of the First World War, that part of Hungary was given to the new state of Czechoslovakia. The Soviet Union claimed the territory after WW II, and today, it is part of the Ukraine.

Avram Gelb and his Descendants

Avram and Chana (or Anna) Gelb had seven children: Joseph, Elias, Shia, Shloyma, Yankel (or Jacob), Moshe, and Riesel (or Ruth). Joseph lived in Rokivka. Elias, Shia and Moshe lived in Onyck. Elias seems to have also lived in Nagyszollis. We know this because his son, Charles, was born there. (Nagyszollis can be translated as “big grapes” and is now part of the Ukraine. It was re-named as Vinograd, or Vinogradov by the Russians and Ukrainians.) Yankel, Shloyma and Riesel either lived in Onyck or in such nearby towns and villages as Salish, Ongward, Orsheva, Chengova, Minghartz and Zareisch.

Avram’s granddaughter, Jeanette recalls the family home in Onyck as consisting of three rooms and an attic. The house had a dirt floor. There was no running water in the house, but the family owned a well a short distance away, and they carried water to the house for cooking and washing. Life in Onyck was difficult. The family lived off what they could grow -- potatoes, cabbage, onions, beans, wheat and corn. There was a small stream nearby and the children could sometimes catch fish, scooping them up in a basket. The family also had chickens and two cows, but eggs, milk and butter were for selling to the village store, never for family consumption.

Avram’s great-grandson, Albert Gelb, and his wife, Pat, visited Onyck in 1998. The town was empty of Jews but they did find the Jewish cemetery and, in fact, located Shia’s grave. They also found the house in which Shia’s son, Mendel, had lived. Today, the town has electricity and running water, but the town’s main street is still a dirt road.

Second Generation: Children of Avram and Chana (or Anna) Gelb

Elias Gelb, “the Prince.” He was the son of Avram and Chana (or Anna) Gelb.

Elias was born in Onyck, Ugosca, Hungary in 1868. He married Blimah Weisberger (the daughter of Esther Brown and Sam Weisberger) in 1884 and had six children: Henry, Helen, Max, Samuel, Sadie and Charles. Elias and his family came to the United States after the turn of the century and settled in New York. Because of his dignity and wisdom, Elias was known as “the Prince” to the rest of the family. When Blimah died, Elias moved in with his daughter, Helen in Swoyersville, Pennsylvania, where he died in 1936.

Shia was born in 1869 and is remembered as a tall man with a little beard who married Fayge Weiss in 1892 from the nearby village of Salish, where her father, Elimelekh Weiss, was reputed to be the “wealthiest Jew in town.” Her mother was named Reizl. Legend has it that Fayge was blind in one eye. They had eight children: Moitya, Lynhe, Elyah, Pinchas, Harry, Pessel, Mendel and Riesel. Shia and Fayge never came to the United States, but most of their children did. Shia died in Szollos, Ugocsa, Hungary (Czechoslovakia) before the Second World War. Fayge died in Auschwitz. His niece, Rose (Joseph’s daughter), remembers Shia with great fondness because he once saved her from drowning in the village well which she had fallen into while chasing a cat.

Shloyma (also known as Charles) was born in 1872 in Onyck, Ugosca, Hungary. He married Chana Dvorya (from Szollos, Ugocsa, Hungary) in 1896 and had four children, Sam, Max, Morris and Rose. He never came to the United States and died in Szollos, Ugocsa, Hungary.

Yankel (also known as Jacob) was born in 1874 in Onyck, Ugosca, Hungary. He married Yenta Weiss (from Salish, Ugosca, Hungary) of the Weiss family from Salish in 1900 and had two children, Harry and Ann. He never came to the United States and died in Europe.
Joseph Gelb, passport photoJoseph was born in 1875 in Rokivka, Hungary. His residence is listed as Honek (Houck, Husgh), Hungary. As a young man, he married Frances Steinberg in 1894 in Szollos, Ugocsa, Hungary. Together they had seven children: Tillie, Harry, Gussie, Rose, Charles, Anna and Moshe.

Frances died giving birth to Moshe in 1908. His son, Beryl, a merchant, married a woman named Sprinta. Beryl, Sprinta, and their daughter, Blima, a seamstress, died in Auschwitz. One of their daughters, Dubrish, married a man named Berger from Israel and moved to Canada after the War. They went into the trash disposal business and were very successful.

DENA FELDMAN DENA FELDMAN’S MOM

Joseph entered the United States on March 3rd, of that year aboard the SS Kroonland, traveling from Antwerp, Belgium. He arrived at Ellis Island with a friend J. Lebovitz (age 22) and is listed as a 33-year-old tailor on the manifest. He met his wife, Dena Feldman, in Brooklyn, NY. In 1911 he married her when she was only fifteen-years old! They had five more children: Abe, Rose, Jeanette, Jacob and Ruth. In New York Joseph lived in a rooming house owned by his mother-in-law. Starting sometime after the turn of the century, Joseph made several trips to Europe, bringing some of his older children back with him each time he returned to the United States. Dena’s mother, with the financial support of Joseph’s nephew (and son-in-law), Henry, brought over Dena and the younger children, Jeanette, Jacob, Rose, and Ruth. This last group left Czechoslovakia in the early 1930s, and traveled to the United States on the Bremen, the last ship to carry Jews from that part of the world to the United States. Joseph settled his family in the Hopkins Street area of New York City, and made a small living operating a fruit and vegetable store. Joseph died in 1951. Dena continued to live in Brooklyn until her death at age ninety-two.

These soldiers of the Austro - Hungarian Imperial army include Moshe Gelb and Paul Gelb.
Moshe was born in 1876 and is remembered as an old, short, very strong man. He was married twice. He married Rose Keller (from Szollos, Ugocsa, Hungary) in 1900. They had three children, Dora, Hencha and Yossuf Hersh. When Rose died, Moshe married Meryl (from Szollos, Ugocsa, Hungary) and had four more children, Max, Hinda, Beryl and Abe. I don’t think that Moshe ever came to the United States. At least some of his children did immigrate, however.

Riesel (also known as Ruth) was born in 1903. She married a man named Shlomo in 1922 and had seven children, Fanny, Srul/Izzy, Schmiel, Yankel, Charles, Max, and Helen. Ruth died in 1944 in the Holocaust.

Third Generation: Grandchildren of Avram and Chana (or Anna) Gelb

Children of Joseph Gelb and Frances Steinberg and Dena Feldman

Children of Joseph Gelb and Dena Feldman: Jeanette, Jack, Rose and Ruth.

Tillie, born June 20th, 1892, was the eldest daughter. In 1910 she married her first cousin, Henry (Elias’s son), in New York City around 1910. For a while, Henry and Tillie’s brother Charles were partners in the Lake View House, a kosher summer resort in Ellenville, New York. Henry and Charles took a mortgage on this property to help bring Joseph’s wife Dena and her younger children to the United States.

Later, Henry and Tillie moved around frequently as Henry’s job as a general manager for the Consolidated Cigar Company took him to such places as Memphis, Tennessee, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and Trenton, New Jersey. Henry also owned a store on the boardwalk in Wildwood, New Jersey. He also owned two rooming houses there. The first, the Til-Anna, was owned in partnership with his brother-in-law Charles. Henry and Tillie owned the second one, the New Chalfont, by themselves. Henry and Tillie had three children, Victor, Frances and Arthur. Henry and Tille finally settled in Camden, New Jersey where Henry entered the neon sign business. Tillie died March 5th, 1959. Henry married again (Fanny), and moved to Philadelphia, where he died in 1963.

Harry was born in 1896 and came to the United States around 1912. His address was listed on his sister Anna’s travel documents as 103rd Street, New York. He was much loved and known for his generosity and great sense of humor. He married Lillian [born in 1899] in 1919 and had four children, Milton, Frances, Ruth and Eleanor. Years later, Harry operated a delicatessen in Washington, DC and also owned and operated the White Ash Cigar Company. Unfortunately, he died of Hodgkin’s Disease in 1939.

Rose was born in 1898. She married William Gorewitz in 1924 and initially lived in that same Williamsburg area of New York, where Bill owned a cleaning store. Around the time of the Second World War, they moved to Washington, DC, where they opened a combination cleaning-sewing-pawn shop. They had two daughters, Frances and Lillian. Rose and Bill have both died.

Gussie was born in 1901. In 1919 she married Samuel Prince, who came to the United States from Kiev in 1913. They lived in the same Williamsburg, New York area as the rest of the Gelb family. Sam ran a small grocery store there, first on Hopkins Street and then in East New York. Sam wasn’t a well man. He gave up the grocery business in New York and, with the help of Gussie’s sister Rose, Sam and his family moved to Washington, D.C., where he opened another grocery store. Gussie and Sam had four children, Morris, William, Frances and Ruth. Sam passed away in 1956, Gussie in 1963.

Charles was born in 1905. He married Anna in 1929. Like the rest of the Gelb family, she lived in the Williamsburg section of New York, where Charles was a shoemaker. They had four daughters, Frances, Ruth, Rosalie and Shirley. Charles, Anna and the younger children moved to Washington, D.C. where Charles opened a small grocery store. As his store became more successful, the older children joined them.

In 1951, Charles bought Claude Neon Lights, a neon sign company from Charles Katz (the son-in-law of Tillie and Henry Gelb) and moved to Philadelphia. Charles was active in helping his Gelb relatives who had survived the war. He assisted Holocaust survivors, including Jack and Harriet Roth and their son, David, to come to the United States. He pleaded with his younger brother Moshe to come to the United States, but Moshe preferred to remain in Czechoslovakia. Charles died in 1967 from a heart attack while playing cards. His wife, Anna, has also passed away.

Anna was born in Onyck, Ugosca, Hungary. She appears to have entered the United States at Ellis Island on July 25th, 1942 aboard the SS Mt. Clinton with her brother “Mendel” (Moshe), age 17. Her age is listed as 22, making her born in 1900. The manifest states the father as Josef Gelb and that the two were going to visit their brother Harry Gelb living at 304 103rd Street, New York. She married Isadore Pearl (from New York) in 1928 and had three children, Gertrude, Ruth, and Pearl who died from whooping cough as a young child. Isadore had been gassed during World War I and suffered permanent injury. Both Anna and Isadore have died.

Moshe Gelb, his first wife, Esther, and their 4 kids. Esther and the kids died in the Holocaust. MOSHE GELB WITH RACHEL’S FAMILY IN 1947.

Moshe was born in 1908 in Szollos, Ugocsa, Hungary. He was the one child that Joseph was unable to bring to the United States. When his brother, Charles, was about to be drafted into the army, he was given Moshe’s papers and fled to the United States. Thus, Moshe was left without papers and was trapped in Czechoslovakia when the Nazis invaded. His wife, Esther, and their four children died in Auschwitz but Moshe survived the camps. He married Rachel in 1946 and began a new life and family. Their children were Abe, Joseph, and Toby. Aaron Baer Gelb, born in 1848, was married twice. His first wife was born in 1850 in Szollos, Ugocsa, Hungary, and died Before 1876 in Beregnagyalmas, Ugozca, Hungary. He had four children with his first wife: Rachel, Schmiel Leib, a second daughter whose name we don’t know, and Avram. After the death of his first wife, Aaron married Zlota Rifka from the town of Szollos. They were married in the town of Mukachevo, Hungary. They had three children: Moisha, born in 1877, Beila, born in 1878, and Samuel, born in 1885. Neither Aaron nor his wives ever came to the United States. Aaron died in Beregnagyalmas, Ugozca, Hungary.

Second Generation: Children of Aaron Baer & Zlota Rifka Gelb

Rachel was born in 1871. She married Samuel Schwartz and had four children, Samuel, Joseph, Lena and Dora. Samuel is referred to on the immigration ship manifest for Samuel Herskowitz, and his wife Beila as being the nephew they were going to visit immediately after their arrival at Ellis Island on March 31, 1903. Samuel Gelb’s address is given as 622 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. Rachel never came to the United States and died in Europe.

Schmiel Leib was born in 1872. He made several trips to the United States, finally settling in Brooklyn around 1914. Schmiel Lieb traveled to the United States several times according to Bette Hershkowitz Sondike. Ships’ manifests for 1906 and 1914 show him arriving at Ellis Island on May 12th, 1914. He arrived under the name of Samull Gelb in the company of Beni Grunstein (Benjamin Greenstein), the Rabbi who performed the marriage of Samuel Hershkovitz and Beila Gelb.

Daughter was born in 1873. Nothing is known about this person except that she did come to the United States and apparently settled in Pennsylvania.

The ship manifest states that he had come to the United States in 1902 and that the purpose of his trip was to join his wife. Moisha Gelb appears to have entered the United States as Moris Gelb on May 9th, 1909 aboard the SS Amerika, arriving at Ellis Island. He’s also listed a friend that he was to visit at 610 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn, NY. The manifest lists his occupation as “day laborer” and states that he resided in Honek (Houck), Hungary. Moshe came to the United States with his daughter, then he returned to the Szollos area. When Roiza died, Moshe re-married around 1921. He died in 1938.

They departed Hamburg, Germany on February 13th, 1903 aboard the SS Pennsylvania and arrived at Ellis Island, New York on March 1st, 1903. On the ship manifest, both are listed as residents of Munkacz (Mukacheve), Hunagry which is now located in Ukraine. They had stated on the manifest that the couple was to visit Beila’s nephew Samuel Schwartz, who lived at 622 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. They settled in Brooklyn where Sam was a baker and she was a bookkeeper. Their 1920 residence was 65 Boerum Street, Brooklyn, New York. They had nine children: Benjamin, Helene, Jean, Bette, Abraham, Harry, Malka, Victor and Shirley. Sam became a U.S. citizen in September, 1937. They came to the United States, settling in Brooklyn. They had four children, Charlie, Abraham, Edith and Edna. Samuel owned the Diamond West Wash Laundry Company in Brooklyn.
