increasing divorce

Jin Ho Lee

These days, divorcing is increasing amazingly. The current Korean community was conservative, so growth of divorce have become a social issue. Korea got 3rd place of Highest rate of divorce in the world. From Chosun age to recent, divorce have been very abnormal and immoral behavior. One who divorces was treated like a destroyer of social order. But these days, divorces are accepted as a choice in marriage life. Divorces of celebrities are on hot focus of the entertainment news and there is even a club of divorced or divorce-willing people which is very public. What brought this abrupt change?

First is the influx of Western paradigm. In traditional Korea, the family and marriage was a unbreakable one. But these days, much western mind and culture has come into Korea. Individualism of western culture had much influence to Korean society, also too marriage culture. Korean people became to think member of family individually. And people became to accept divorce.

Second, hasty and tempered marriages ensue increased divorce. And after those marriages, couples realize that they don't match well. Today's couples have tendency to marry without considering deeply. This tendency can also be thought because of decreasing of thinking that family is important.

Last, the crisis on economy of Korea influenced the divorce. Korea got economical crisis in 1997 and after that economy has been not good. So there were many job-less, homeless, and bankrupted people. They could not sustain their family, so they divorced. The statistical data that the divorce rate increased rapidly after 1997 supports the third reason.

I think this increase of divorce is the phenomenon of change of paradigm. Maybe after little long period, the divorce rate will decrease. Because the divorce rate cannot increase without the limit, and it is just one of confusion of changes of society.
