Take the A-12 NE from London to Colchester.
From Colchester continue NE on A-12 to B-1070 (East Bergholt).
Turn NORTH on B-1070 to Hadleigh
In Hadleigh continue NORTH on A-1141 through Chelsworth and Lavenham.
Continue NORTH as A-1141 becomes A-134 on into Bury St. Edmunds.
From Bury St. Edmunds take A-143 Northeast to Stanton where keep left on B-1111, and then right on B-1114 just north of A-1066. Then at Kenninghall B-1114 becomes B-1113, which gets you the rest of the way into Norwich.
From Norwich to Shrewsbury one can follow A-47(T) through East Dereham, Swaffham, Kings Lynn, Wisbech, Peterborough, to Leicester. Dont get lost in Leicester, stay on A-47 all the way to Hinckley, where you can get on A-5 (Watling Street) towards the west. Stay on A-5 through Tamworth, Telford, and then arrive in Shrewsbury. In the morning when starting out and arriving at Swaffham, consider going north on A-1065 and going about five miles to Castle Acre. Southwest of Swaffham about 8 miles is also Oxborough Hall. In the afternoon when on A-5 passing Tamworth consider stopping to see the castle in Tamworth.
From Shrewsbury take A-458 to Welshpool, and then stay on it into the Cambrian Mountains. Turn right at its end on A-470, which runs to Barmouth Bay at Dolgellau, and then A-470 turns north to Trawsfynydd Lake. Turn west towards Porthmadog (eventually getting on A-497) and come to Portmeirion.
From Portmeirion take A-4573 south to Harlech Castle, and then continue South along the coast on A-496, turning west at Barmouth and coming again to Dolgellau, then taking A-470 to its junction with A-487. Take A-487 South to Machynlleth and the Dovey Valley, where one can turn east on A-489 (T) to Cemmaes Road, and then take A-470 (T) towards Newton. From Newton one can take A-483 (T) South to Dolfor, and then take B-4355 to Knighton. From Knighten one can stay on B-4355 south to Kington, and then take A-44 east to Leominster, then on to Bromyard, and on into Worcester. In Worcester one can take the M-5 down south to Tewkesbury, getting off on A-438 to the East towards Stow-on-the-Wold where a Youth Hostel is located. In this area are the Cotswold villages.
From Stow-on-the-Wold use A-429 and A-34 to get up to Stratford-upon-Avon. From there, retrace A-34 (T) south to Oxford.
From Oxford take A-420 west and south to the junction with A338. Then follow A-388 south through Wantage, Hungerford, North Tiaworth, and then turn right (east) on A-303 to Stonehenge. From Stonehenge South on A-345 (at Amesbury) to Salisbury. From Salisbury A-338 continues south. Make certain to see old Saxon church in Breamore near Fordingbridge. At Fordingbridge turn west (right) on B-3078 to Cranborne where a Youth Hostel is.
From Cranborne take B-3081 to junction with A-354, and then turn right (northeast) towards Salisbury. In Salisbury take A-343 to Andover. In Andover take A-303 east, then it changes name to A-30 just before you get on the M-3. The M-3 takes one into London.
