GRAICHEN SURNAME RESEARCH

When I began researching the Graichen line in my family history, I had little firsthand knowledge, so I contacted several of my Graichen relatives to see what data they might possess. Although they were able to provide me with a few new facts on my grandfather and great grandfather, they did not have any information on my earlier Graichen ancestors or on the Graichen surname in general.

I then decided to contact other Graichens in the United States in order to (1) determine if we were directly related, (2) ascertain the ancestry of other persons with the unusual name of Graichen to find out if we shared a common heritage, and (3) acquire as much data as I could on all Graichen families in the U.S. so as to learn more about the history of the Graichens as well as be able to assist others researching the Graichen family name. From the information I gathered I determined that there was a need to compile and assemble the data into a record of all the Graichen families in the United States. In 1988 I authored The Graichen Families of America.

THE GRAICHEN FAMILIES OF AMERICA

In The Graichen Families of America I devote a chapter to each of the twenty-five Graichen immigrants to the United States and then list all the known descendants of each immigrant. The book chronicles the American ancestry (up to seven generations) of over ninety percent of all Graichens living in the U.S. and accounts for more than 1,200 of the persons who, since 1850, have embodied the Graichen families of America.

Shown below is the Table of Contents from the book. I am continuing my research with the intent of writing a second edition. If you are interested in learning more about the book and my research or have any information regarding Graichen families, please e-mail me at [email protected].
