How to know what You like to do?

by Jatinder Singh Sodhi

Life is sometimes strange as it present you with so many oppurtunities and questions. But sometimes you surprise life by asking it this question: "How to know what I like to do?". Seems quite easy and harmless but to answer that it requires take two pieces:
  1. A deep breath
  2. A deep dive inside yourself

Lets do the easier part first. Lets Inhale. Yeah. Deep Breath.... Let it fill your lungs. Hold it for three seconds... Now Exhale. Wow. That felt good.

Now to the more tastier part... a deep dive inside yourself.

Well this is a paradox. The more you try to make yourself immersed in you the more your mind flies. Dont worry, lets use some easier way. Make a list. Thats it. Pick up a pen. Better still open Word or Notepad and start typing. Lets begin it. And we have some handy tips on how to become pros in this.

Lets make it a fun game:
Well make our list under five headings. The things that I feel are more interesting. I'll type what attracts me and you fill in what you like (you have that Notepad ready, don't you?) Steaming Soup. Photo courtesy www.photo.net

I. Eat & Drink(resist yourself to list just four entires)

  1. Enjoy eating hot chocolate fudge with brownies and lots of nuts and chocolate sauce.
  2. Love to sip slowly crisp cool red wine and roll my tongue in it while it is still in my mouth.
  3. Relish hot steamy pizzas loaded with cheese and mushrooms.
  4. Love eating a king sized pack of patoto chips yearningly dipped in sour cream.
  5. Hell! Four is over. Next.

II. Things that I enjoy Doing (Again just four things)

  1. Fond of reading about the people who have achieved greatness in business or arts and to learn about their energy and accomplishments excites me to take actions (that was a long one).
  2. Like to write whatever is not very clear in my mind.
  3. Feel good about unwinding by taking long walks.
  4. Enjoy the pleasure of dancing.
  5. Feel the beauty and lightness when I listen to music.
  6. Get pleasure from playing an energetic game with friends.
  7. Hey this thing is getting longer that I thought.

III. Things I always think that I want to do (Need I mention how many things to list?)

  1. Learn to dance
  2. Play the guitar
  3. Appreciate classical music(enter your own idiosyncrasy here)
  4. Learn to cook mexican food
  5. Want to do bungee jumping
  6. Well some people never learn.

IV. Things that my friend, brother, sister, relative, mother, father, filmstar, neighbour, does but that I dont do and want to do

  1. Make decisions and stick to them (Brother)
  2. Have an amazing group of friend (Best Friend)
  3. Learn to drive a car (Cousin)
  4. Plan and create a product that sells millions (Boss)
  5. Be the man of the house and command respect everywhere and get it affectionately (Uncle)
  6. Never be afraid of meeting people and getting work done(Grandfather)
  7. Have a wonderful and rich vocabulary (Yet to find someone)

Wow. This has been fun. And I bet my computers harddisk that you must be feeling it too. Ok. Now to the basics. The reason that we did this exercise together was to highlight some things that you like to do. We put some headings and that made the dive into ourselves a lot easier and enjoyable. Thats when I think they say I enjoy working with myself.

Once we have this list ready we have a good idea of what is it that you like to do. And now that you know it, the choices are unlimited. You can apply these to any number of fields - personal development, career, inter-personal communication, everywhere.

Lets do the following three things:

  1. Pick out one item from any list and see how you can do more of it. The reason can be anything personal happiness (that feeling of enthusiasm and energy and fulfillment), earning money, being known and respected for it, (m)anythings.
  2. Make a decision that you'll do it.
  3. Just do it.

How about taking an example and winding up:

  1. Item from the list - Learning to play the guitar.
  2. Make a decision to do it - Made the decision (the sign that a decision is made is known by the action taken. See next step).
  3. Just do it - Looked up the web/yellow pages, made a phonecall and enrolled myself for an evening class. Good.

That I think sums it up. And the intersting part is that this exercise will stay with you and me even when we have gone to other things.

Enjoy
