Charlotte

1816 - 1855

She was the third daughter in a family of five girls and a boy, and outlived them all.

The family moved to Haworth from Thornton, Yorkshire, when Charlotte was 4 years old. She spent a year at Cowan Bridge School and left after her 2 elder sisters, Maria and Elizabeth died of tuberculosis.

In 1831, Charlotte went to Roe Head. She left a year later, but later returned as a teacher.

Following 2 short spells at a school in Brussels she again returned to Haworth, and in 1846 began her most famous novel, Jane Eyre. The book received immediate success.

On the 29th of June, 1854, Charlotte married Arthur Bell Nicholls who was a curate. The 2 married in Haworth Church.

Charlotte died on the 31st of March, 1855, at the age of 39. She died from excessive sickness related to pregnancy.
