The Four Seasons In Hungary

There are four seasons in Hungary: spring, summer, autumn and winter.

At the End of February the first snow drop grows. This means that the spring is approaching. The spring lasts from March to the legging of June. In this season the migratory birds come back. Körmend is the town of storks and we can also find a lot of swallows, which are common in Hungary. The average temperature is 14°C. The flowers bloom, and on the trees the buds appear. In the gardens people begin the work. In May it may be +27°C but +5°C too. So the temperature can be very extreme. At the End of May or beginning of June the summer starts. The temperature is high but it often rains in early summer. There is an observation in connection with the early summer rain: if it rains on the 8 th June, it means that it will rain for 40 days. In July it might be +35°C. The temperature of the lakes may be +25°C. People go on holiday. The August can be fresh but the days are hot still. In Hungary July and August are usually the hottest months.

In September the temperature falls back, and the autumn sets in. It rains a great deal some days can be beautiful. This is the Indian Summer. In September and October the leaves fall down.

Rain is heavy in November, and it might snow, but in last year (2000) there wasn’t any snow. December and January are cold. In these months the temperature might be –18°C. And in February the whole cycle stars again… (by Linda Horváth X.B)

My Favourite Season

My favourite season is summer, because you can do a lot of things. If you wish, you can go out to enjoy yourself. You can sun bathe in your garden or on the beach.

Summer in Hungary is the favourite season for pupils and students because of the 2 months holiday when they have plenty of time to do what they want. For example, you can go camping, swimming, sailing, fishing or what ever they wish. You can relax all day without studying.

But if you haven’t got the chance to go on a holiday near a beach or a lake, the hot temperature of the sunny days can be unpleasant. Also, you may become too lazy, if you don’t do anything the whole day.

During my summer holidays I always go to Alföld  (The Hungarian Great Plain in the eastern part of Hungary) to visit my grandmother and my friends. Last summer I spent a week in Szombathely, (the main city of Vas County, where I live) at a training-camp, where I had a very good time. In the summer time I read a lot, because I’ve got enough time.

If you want to go on a holiday in Hungary, there are a lot of places to visit. First, the favourite area of the tourists is Lake Balaton, where there are a lot of famous sights; Badacsony, Tihany, Balatonfüred, Siófok, Keszthely. One of the resort cities is Budapest, the capital of Hungary.

I love summer very much, because, I don’t have to go to school, and I can spend more time with my family and friends. (by Ilona Daka X.B)

The Easter is one of our most important celebrations. Like everyone in the Christian world we recognize the resurrection. It's at 21st March or on the following full moon running Sunday. At the earliest it is on 22nd March, at the latest on 25th April. A lot of folk customs and traditions relates to Easter. We eat customary foods: lamb, ham, milk loaf, eggs and horse-radish. As part of the celebration we decorate the boiled eggs.  Usually we make red and blue eggs, but the painted eggs aren't rare in the country. The next morning the boys and men go to sprinkle the familar girls and women, because they mustn't fade. This tradition derives from the ancient custom of the fertilization. They sprinkle with fragrant parfume, but it isn't excluded, that they put in with a can of water. This custom is common rather in the country. The girls give in return nicely painted boiled eggs or money.
