The Gossip's Bowl

This may be familiar to you from Shakespeare, as Puck says in A Midsummer Night's Dream:

"Sometime lurk I in a gossip's bowl,
In very likeness of a roasted crab;
And, when she drinks, against her lips I bob
And on her wither'd dewlap pour the ale."
(A Midsummer Night's Dream, Act II Scene II)

1 quart ale
1 pint white wine
1/2 oz nutmeg
Moist sugar to taste
Roasted crab apples

Heat the ale and wine. Add sugar and nutmeg to taste. Roast the crab apples and float them on the hot ale.
