THe President's Message
By William "BILL" Campbell

The new century has been a very active time for your president and members of the chapter. The Spring Fling had a fine crowd and the speaker was well received. Our monthly meetings at the Hanscom Officers' Club are also well attended. The mini-meeting at McDonald's in Walpole draws nearly as many members as the regular meeting. This issue has all the news of our three very successful outings in recent months. We are scheduled to march in the Chinese Independence Day Parade in downtown Boston around the 10th of October. This is an event that we all enjoy particularly since a Chinese lunch is served to marchers when the parade ends in Chinatown. Why not march with us?

The Fall Fling will be our fifteenth. It looks like we will have an excellent turnout as usual. I would like to thank each and every member for his confidence and support. I would thank everybody by name who contributed to our success but I might miss a few and that would not be good.

We are entering the winter season and outdoor activities are limited. However we are working on a couple of projects to brighten wintertime and it won't be long before spring returns. Well, maybe longer than I think. Winter likes my home town of Clinton so much it comes early and stays late. Like your brother-in-law when there's a good football game on TV. There are suggestions for keeping in touch in this issue. A membership application is in here too waiting for your signature if you are not a member already. Hope to see you at the next meeting.

Brittany-O Crew invited to Fling!

Members of the Eighth Air Force Mass. Chapter are looking forward to seeing the crew members of the Brittany-O at our Fall Fling. The O'Meara's and Simones' are going to be most welcome guests. The Board of Directors voted not only to invite them but to award them a plaque expressing our gratitude. The crew kept us dry on our excellent cruise and we hope that someone has also warned them our Flings are dry!

HOW TO FIND OUT WHAT'S GOING ON

  1. Come to our monthly meeting at Hanscom Field. Third Thursday at Oh Eleven Hundred.
  2. Come to our min-meeting, first, Oh Ten Hundred, First Tuesday. McDonald's Rte. 1 and Union Street, Walpole.
  3. Call a pal who does go to the meetings.
  4. Check our website: http://www.geocities.com/eighthafhs

SERIOUS STUFF.... THE DUES QUESTION!!!

All are welcome to join the Eighth Air Force Historical Society.  Dues are $20 a year!  (It was just raised by the national organization.) You pay us twenty dollars only when you first join!  After that, the National organization will bill you for $20 once a year.  That's the only money involved.  You get two issues of "Vapor Trails" and four issues of the highly professional Time magazine-sized "The Eighth Air Force News" as well as a chance to take part in the sort of fun events you read about in this issue.  Please do NOT send your dues to our saintly treasurer once you've sent that first ten. You don't want to get on his WRONG side, do you?

UUUU HOME TO ARLINGTON UUUU

World War Two Aircraft and the bodies of those who died in them are still turning up after all these years. Ruins of a B-24 were found on Kitten Mountain in China's Guangxi Province in 1996. It had crashed after bombing Japanese ships near Formosa, now Taiwan, 8-31-44. The airmen's bodies were recovered and identified by our Department of Defense. Four airmen were buried privately here in the States and six were buried in Arlington National Cemetery in August 2000.
