Gun Boy was shot to death in a battle with mall security. (Did you know they carry Uzis? I didn't.) Knife Girl died stabbing the lout who shot Gun Boy.
So I made up a new character, Ghost Boy, with his faithful sidekick Spectre Girl. Pretty much all the same as before, but both could dematerialize for one round on the anniversary of their deaths. (I didn't want to put a lot of points into the power. Besides, their original deaths were pretty cheesy.)
Ghost Boy and Spectre Girl, having been given another chance by the powers of the afterlife to combat evil, promptly wasted it.
Ghost Boy tracked down the mall security man who had killed him and Knife Girl at an area hospital, and promptly shot him in the head. With the unfinished business of his mortal life gone, Ghost Boy and Spectre Girl could then move on to the business of crimefighting.
Soon enough, poor Ghost Boy was shot to death by Secret Service agents while he was trying to rescue the satanist daughter of a congressman. Spectre Girl was shot by another player's character for trying to kill that self-same congressman's daughter. Spectre Girl lived though, and, at a prison hospital, fingered that same PC for all manner of horrid crimes, then committed suicide.
I moved on to my next character, Demon Boy and his faithful sidekick, Succubus Girl.
Having been shown to be unworthy souls to the powers that be, they both had been sentenced to The Bad Place, but escaped back to Earth. Both were pretty much as they originally were, but looked odd. Both had fangs, Demon Boy had protective scales, and Succubus Girl might've had cute lil' horns or something.
Neither got very far adventuring, but haven't died yet.
If they do, I have my next character ready, Seraphim Boy, and his sidekick, Angel Girl.
