Ability scores are the usual.
Strength
Intelligence
Wisdom
Dexterity
Constitution
Charisma

Roll 4d6, subtract the lowest and add the other three.
Start recording when you have a 16 or above.
Arrange scores however you like.

Choose race.
Human: humans are humans. Can be any class.
Korobokuru: a race of Oriental dwarves. May be barbarians, bushi, samurai, wu jen, or yakuza.
Spirit Folk: descendants of humans and various nature spirits. May be samurai, kensai, bushi, or monks.
There are three types, bamboo, river, and sea spirit folk.
Hengeyokai: intelligent, shape-changing animals. May be shukenja, kensai, bushi, or wu jen.
There are many types: carp, cat, crab, crane, dog, drake, fox, hare, monkey, raccoon dog, rat, and sparrow.
Gaijin: humans, but foreigners. Rolled up with the regular AD&D rules. Generally considered barbarians. Not especially recommended.

Choose class.
Samurai: are members of an elite class of warrior nobility. Their prime duty is to be loyal to a daimyo and serve him however he commands.
Shukenja: wandering holy men. Act as teachers, advisors, and healers to whoever needs their aid. They are respected by all for their devotion and magical abilities.
Sohei: warrior priests, but much more warrior than priest. They protect monasteries from attacks and extend the monasteries' political claims. They have limited magical ability.
Kensai: martial artists in the purest sense; their life is devoted to mastering a single weapon and achieving perfection in its use.
Barbarian: hunters, raiders, and nomads. They live by instinct and natural talents, beyond the bounds of civilization.
Bushi: professional soldiers from all ranks of society.
Wu Jen: sorcerers and magicians. They usually live as hermits in remote areas, and are greatly feared and respected for their powers.
Monk: seek to create a perfect union between mind and body through the practice of meditation and fighting skills.
Yakuza: thugs and extortionists, but they are also the peacekeepers and guardians of the common man. Structured bands of yakuza collect tribute from the local merchants in exchange for protection.
Ninja: are practitioners of ninjutsu (the art of invisibility). They are masters of stealth, disguise, acrobatics, and assassination.
They cannot act openly, so they must also be either a bushi, sohei, wu jen, or a yakuza.

Then roll 2d10. Then roll 1d8 three times.
