As of the 01/01/2004 I have worked 70 DXCC entities. All qso's were made using a Yaesu FT100 transciever. All contacts were made on vertical polarization.
The best distance I have worked to date was with Mark, VK8MS at 1215hrs (Local time) on the 26/02/2002. Mark is located in PH57. I was located 2Km outside Spiddal, Co. Galway (IO53IG).
I was operating 15 meters mobile at the time when I heard PW0T say he was switching over to 6 meters to give it a try. I switched from my Pro-Am 15 meter whip over to my Pro-Am 6 meter whip. I was listening to 4X4GT & 4X6UU on 50.115Mhz after having a qso with them, when I thought I heard a VK calling. Sure enough I could not believe my ears when I heard VK8MS calling DX. He was about 5/1 - 5/3 when I called him using 100w from a Yaesu FT100. He came back after the first call out!, I could not believe it!. We exchanged callsigns and locators, he was 5/3 with some distortion on the audio, which was possibly due to the polar path. I dropped the pwr back to 80w, at this stage he was finding it hard to hear me.
I suppose it was just being in the right place at the right time!. I was the only EI amateur to work VK this sun spot cycle. EI6AS & EI5FK have done so on previous cycles. What made this one special was that the contact was made from a mobile!. I have made many contacts during the sporadic E season using the Pro-Am whip, I always found it somewhat "Deaf". I can only assume there would have been a cracker of a signal if I had a yagi! for those brief few minutes.
