Community Service Reflection

Unfortunately, this year I procrastinated my community service, not fulfilling it until rather late in the second semester.  In my 8 1/2 hours I cleaned my church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) for the coming of an Apostle, Dallin H. Oaks, and also worked at the Special Olympics at PLNU.

The cleaning of my church was actually quite fun.  There were many people there.  I was assigned to clean the mats on one side of the building.  It was not easy work, seeing that I had to get down on my hands and knees and scrub with soap, but the feeling afterward, knowing that I had put in good work was great.  I was also humbled to see many of our church leaders on their hands and knees also, cleaning dirt from under mats, making sure their job was done perfectly.  The church cleaning was a great experience to do good work, and see good work be done.

My second opportunity for community service came later, when one of my lacrosse coaches asked if anybody wanted to help with community service.  Five of my friends went with me to Point Loma Nazarene University, and we helped the Chula Vista Kiwanis Club serve lunch.  We also had the opportunity to cheer on the competitors.  Though not all of the competition was in prime athletic form, all had a ton of heart really trying hard.  We were inspired by their actions.  We also had fun cleaning up, building a 9 foot tower of chairs and throwing ice at each other.  This service activity truly was fun, and showed us how to really have heart.
