A New Arrival to the Hartsay Family!
5-12-04

Just about two weeks and a few days ago a (realatively) healthy 7 mo. old baby boy found his way into our family.

Found thin and crying in a parking lot, he learned quickly to adapt to an interior environment.

Happily he was litter trained as soon as he walked in the door.

Such a short time ago and already he's learning to climb the curtains and retract his claws when he jumps up on my legs...

Could it be? Yes it is! We have a new fuzzbutt!
A Good Welcome to Makher!

FOOD
He likes pieces of turkey  and Fancy Feast cans. He has a bowl of dried food out for emergencies, but prefers the cans.
He also gets some hamburger meat (no onions of course), but has so far ignored it..  He will not yet eat pieces of my eggs or any cheese. However, I do not yet know if cheese is good for cats (in small doses) and therefore am not pressing it on him. He also is not crazy about canned chicken.

He seems to be more attracted to the bowl of water placed in front of the space heater than to his own
two bowls of water. This a mystery as the radiator water bowl is nasty. I have very hard water and when it evaporates hard mineral encrustments line the bowl. As of now the bowl is crusted with mineral deposits and the same deposits are floating thickly in the water. And yet he keeps trying to drink out of it. Am worried that this might indicate some sort of deficiency. Another thing to be discussed with vet.
A vet trip is yet to come. He is very healthy and eats well, but he will need to go down for a checkup soon.
Favorite Toys:
1. laser pointer (I got this at Petco). It is attached to my keychain and he comes running every time he hears the keys clink. He can chase the little light for hours, and cries when it is turned off.
2. Squeaky Fish: (OurToys - I think) - this is not your average squeaky mouse, it actually has a microchip in it that makes it squeak whenever it is even slightly moved.
It was very successful when first taken out of the package and is still played with regularly, but does not compete with the laser pointer.
3. Easter Palm leaves - the el-cheapo version of the 'cat teaser' This actually is more popular than the squeaky mouse when I play with him.

I am thinking about one of those robotic mice that run around on its own and make noises, but I am worried that it might scare him...
I am trying to train him to a harness and leash, as I live in the city.

The fascination with the bowl of 'spaceheater water' reached its logical and messy conclusion

When I got home from internet, I discovered he had been on top of one of my altars and knocked over the incense stand. Sand is such an annoyance to vacuum up.

Add pieces of strip steak into items he will only eat if forced to it.
Impulse to chase my ankles and nip and grab them (and hands) AND forget to retract claws is growing. Has taken to propel self across carpet by use of bottom fore-leg and bottom hind leg while lying on his side. He moves like a freakin' side winder or shark, and he can go FAST that way. Tends to move that way mostly when in pursuit of my feet.
Was introduced to little 'real rat fur mouse.' REal rat fur mouse has been in the air since then. He looks so cute carrying it around by its tail!

Tendancy to chase ankles increasing. I have taken to crossing living room by propelling rolly chair across carpet. I left him home alone whilst I went to do internet. Neglected to leave light on.  Due to Noah worthy deluge was very late (and completely soaked) getting home. Found furbaby hiding from the thunder under living room table. He refused to eat pieces of crispy duck, but ate his can. Little rat fur mouse has been shredded.

Recieved nasty scratch in ambush hand grab. Little rat fur mouse is missing in action. Attention has returned to pink holographic jinggly star and squeaky fish.

This is particularly amusing when you realize that 'Yesterday's News' is a brand of cat litter....
