OTTOMAN RULE IN 1801!!!!
The Ottoman flag flew over the city because officially the Turks were in control of Cairo.

One of the Turks that was left in charge was a young officer named Mohammed Ali. Mohammed Ali made himself pasha of Egypt in 1806. He would rule Egypt for forty-three years.


BRITISH ATTACK
The British attacked Egypt in 1807 with the intention of overthrowing the Turks.

However, the five thousand Albanian troops defeated the British and had the captured British soldiers sold into slavery.

After defeating the British, Mohammed Ali was in a very good position. By 1808, he was powerful enough to confiscate all of the land in Egypt.

A Changing Egypt
The Suez Canal was started in 1859 after Mohammed Ali's death. It was finally opened in 1869 and thereafter tied Egypt to Europe.
Gas was brought to Cairo for the FIRST time by Ismail, Ali�s grandson, in 1870.
