YA  AHLAN  fi  "ISKKENDRYIAH"
                                       Welcome   to   "ALEXANDRIA"
*Islam&Arabian Conquest :
When the Muslim Arabs took Alexandria in 642, Arabs forecs were led by Amr Ibn-el-'Aas,Amr was appointed as ruler of Egypt, the Muslim Caliph Omar ordered Amr  "Establish your capital wherever you wish, but let be no water between you and me",said Omar, This meant that Alexandria could not serve as  the Capital as long as the Nile river existed. The Arabs moved east of the Nile, where they established another city, Al-Fostat (Cairo)
and became the capital of Egypt instead of Alexandria, but Arabs admired the rich history of Alexandria city,so they started to built splendid mosques,cisterns,walls,fortesses..during their rule in Spain (Andalucia ),some scholars came and took Alexandria as their resident, like  El mursi  Abu el Abbas(he was  Andalusian ) and we have a his famous mosque (the one in this above pic),it's the biggest mosque & most ancient one  in my city...the mosque was built on Andalusian style.

Alexandria continued to flourish as a trading center, principally for textiles and luxury goods, as Arab influence expanded westward through North Africa and then into Europe. The city also was important as a naval base, especially under the Fatimids and the Mamluks, Alexandria survived the early Crusades relatively unscathed, and the city came into its own again with the development of  the East-West spice trade, which Egypt monopolized,The loss of this trade--which came about after the discovery of the sea route to India
in 1498 and the Turkish conquest of Egypt in 1517--was the final blow to the city's fortunes,Under Turkish
rule the canal linking Alexandria to the Rosetta branch of the Nile was allowed to silt up, strangling the city's commercial lifeline.
*French Campaign :
you can say that  By the time Napoleon invaded Egypt in 1798, Alexandria had been reduced to a fishing village, and lost its important cultural position but the Scientific French expedition who accompanied Napoleon in his campaign has wrote about Alexandria and added  Illustrations and maps shown in "Dscription d'Egypte",then after ending the French campaign...British occupation started In 1882 and occupied Egypt for
more than 100 years.
During then Egypt was ruled as kingdom by Mohammed Ali's family (Turkish rulers),this family has built alot of palaces and villas in Alexandria..to be their summer residence like the  Palace of Montazah ..During the 19th cent. many foreigners settled in Alexandria(British,French,Greek,Italian,Armenian,Turkish,Russian..etc),
and in 1907 they made up about 25% of the population. During World War II, as the chief Allied naval base in the Mediterranean, Alexandria was bombed by the Germans...

*the Egyptian white revolution 23th of July 1952:

by the 1952,there was a grand revolution(we called White revolution cause there was no blood-shed has happened) against the occupation and the King, then from that time Egypt becomes Republic..and completely
free country.

Egypt(specially Alexandria)has been invaded by different foreign foreces over by over, those invaders tried to settle down in Egypt and to erase its Egyptian identity...but Egyptians got more stuck to their heritage and
never been changed...we love our country and so proud of our history.

now our past invaders became our Friends ,indeed  Egypt has very  good political, commercial&cultural
relations  with all her  neighbours in area.
*Modern Alexandria :-
Its cultural role is still preserved ,Alexandria is considered to be  the most cleanest city in Egypt, as there is no any sort of pollution, the city is full of Malls,Libraries, beaches along the corniche, restaurants, theatres and resorts.Definitely it is worth your visit.
