The Safeguard
(c) 2000 by D. M. Wilder
                  Northwest Georgia, May, 1864

Lavinia Wheeler did not turn a hair when Sherman's armies swept down through Georgia in early May of 1864, even when they fought a battle right outside her town and took over her house for a hospital. But when her beloved collection of early colonial pottery is threatened, the aristocratic spinster decides that it is time to do something. She applies to the Union commander for an interview and charms him into granting a safeguard

Sergeant Major Asa Sheppard of the 8th Ohio cavalry is told that guarding Miss Wheeler's property would be an easy assignment that would enable him to rest and recover. The middle-aged widower quickly discovers that guarding the strong-minded spinster and her hideous pots is going to be anything but easy, but he also begins to realize that his task is something he could grow to love. If, that is, he has a chance to while he tries to fight off renegade marauders, Union foragers and Confederate guerrillas during the hot summer of Sherman's Atlanta campaign.
