This report is a collection of facts, hypotheses, and questions that I have gathered or developed about Jacob Shouse,
who lived near Levee in Montgomery County, Kentucky from at least 1810 to about 1859. My purpose in compiling
this information was to make it more readily available to other researchers, thereby stimulating thought about Jacob
and his descendants in the hope of connecting a few more branches of the Shouse/Shoush family tree.

The report is divided into two sections: 1) a narrative of my preliminary findings; and 2) a compilation of facts,
hypothesis, and questions about Jacob Shouse and his descendants. The report, however, is limited in scope since I
based it primarily on the: Abstracts of Shouse and Shoush Transactions Recorded in Montgomery Co., KY Deed
Books: 1818-1875 by Chester C. Buchanan, November 18, 2001 (unpublished manuscript); Some Marriage in
Montgomery County, Kentucky Before 1864 collected by Hazel Mason Boyd for the Kentucky Society, DAR (March
1961); 19th century census records for Montgomery County, Kentucky; notes from the files of Hazel Mason Boyd
(retired genealogist in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky); and miscellaneous records that are referenced below.

Narrative
It seems as if the spelling of Shouse with an “h” substituted for the “e”, at least for this family line of Shouse, begin in
Montgomery County in the early 1800s. It was not unusual for surnames to be spelled in a varied of forms at this
time since a large percentage of the population could not read or write, but signed with a mark, and surname spelling
had not yet become standardized by the literate. For example, the Montgomery County Clerks between 1818 and
1868 frequently wrote Shouse and Shoush interchangeability when transcribing land transactions in the county deed
books. Sometimes the clerk used both forms of the surname in the same document for the same person.

According to U.S. census records, Jacob Shouse was likely born between 1770 and 1780. These records, along with
tax records, indicate that a Jacob Shouse lived in Madison County, Kentucky in 1800, then moved to Montgomery
County around 1810, but the documents are not adequate to determine if the same man or difference men. Jacob first
acquired land along the Lulbegrud Creek, near Levee, Kentucky in 1818. He continued to buy and sell land in this
area until he died around 1859. His first documented wife was Esther (occasionally referred to as Ester), who was
first mentioned in the 1821 Montgomery County deed book. There is a possibility that Jacob may have married
someone before Esther and that some of his children were by his first wife. Likely candidates are Susannah Woodall
of Madison County, Kentucky and Susannah Hogby of Woodford County, Kentucky.

Jacob seems to have fathered three boys and one girl between 1800 and 1810, then another boy and two girls between
1820 and 1825. If two wives and because of the age difference between the two groups of children, the four older
children could have been by the first wife, and the three younger ones by Esther. The first four would have been
Andrew (1803), William (1807), Julia, and Henry. The two younger ones could have been Sallie (1817) and
Hezekiah (1818), though the birth dates are a little off from the census, but that was not uncommon for such early
records.

Soon after Jacob’s death, Esther granted power-of-attorney to her neighbor, Ezekial Rose, over her personal needs
and business affairs. She died sometime before 1864. After Jacob’s death, his real estate was divided among,
William, Henry, Julia Lonas, and Andrew, while Esther’s dower divided her real estate among William, Henry, and
Sally Smith. This does not mean that these individuals were the only heirs, but only that they received land as at least
part of their inheritance.

As was common in rural communities during the 1800s, several of Jacob’s children married neighbors and operated
farmers in the area. Andrew, presumably Jacob’s oldest child, lived next to Jacob in 1830, but according to the deed
books he had moved by 1855.

William married Susan (whom I believe to be Susan Willoughby) in 1827. She was probably the daughter of James
Willoughby who lived in the vicinity of Jacob in 1830. Susan was probably a teenage when she married because in
1830 she was between 15 and 20 years old and her father was between 40-50 years old. They lived near Jacob from
at least 1830 to about 1851 when they sold the last of their property to James Willoughby (could this be the son of
James?). Sometime between late 1851 and early 1859 they moved to Macon, Missouri. Their son, William Shoush,
Jr., remain in Montgomery Co., Kentucky. In 1859, while in Missouri, William, Sr. sold his inheritance interest for
his father’s estate and his future interest in his mother’s dower to William, Junior. James Willoughby, brother of
Susan, may have moved to Macon Co., MO, where he died in 1893.

Four Smith families lived in the vicinity of Jacob at one time or another from 1830 to 1864. The first was John Smith,
who was 60 to 70 years old in 1830. At that time, John had three boys living with him in the 20-30 age category, and
a boy and girl each in the 15-20 age category. The younger boy could have been James Smith because he was in the
20-30 age category in the 1840 census, 37 years old in the 1850, and 46 years old in the 1860. Another one of John’s
children could have been Obediah Smith who was 47 years old in 1850 and 57 in 1860. Both of these young men
(James and Obediah) after marriage lived in the vicinity of Jacob Shouse and John Smith. One person who does not
fit into this picture is John Smith, who lived next to Jacob Shouse in 1840, because he was from 40 to 50 years old at
the time. Was this the same John Smith of 1830 or John, Jr?

James Smith first appeared in the records living near Jacob Shouse in 1840 and continued to live in the vicinity until at
least 1864. Because of his farm’s close proximity to Jacob’s and good circumstantial evidences that one of Jacob’s
daughters was named Sally and married a Smith (see below), it is reasonable to assume that James’ wife, Sarah (aka,
Sally) as listed in the 1850 and 1860 census, was also Sally (Sarah) Shouse.

Obediah Smith first appeared in the records near Jacob Shouse in 1850 and again in 1860. Actually, Obediah Smith
seems to have occupied John Smith’s farm that was next to Jacob Shouse and Ezekial Rose. The reason Obediah
Smith is interesting is that Obediah Shoush (Jacob’s grandson by Andrew) was recorded at Obediah Smith’s residence
during the 1850 census, thus strengthening the hypothesis that James Smith and Obediah Smith were brothers, and
that Sarah Smith’s maiden name was Shouse.

There are also good circumstantial evidences that Hezekiah Shoush was related to the Shouses of Levee. Though he
never appeared in the records living near Levee, he did live nearby (just outside of Mt. Sterling - was a carpenter),
and he had a sister named Sally Smith (see below). Also, Hezekiah and his family moved to Macon County, Missouri
about the same time (if not within a year or so) as William J. and Susan Shoush.

                          *************

              Jacob Shouse - b. 1770-80; d. 1855-59
Age:
      · 26-45 years old in 1810 census and 60-70 years old in 1840 census - not in any other census
      · The files of Hazel Mason Boyd (retired genealogist in Mt. Sterling, KY) indicate that Carol Shouse of
Wichita, Kansas believes that the 1790 census implied that Jacob was born in 1773 (yet to confirm)
      · Because of information in Montgomery Co., KY deed books, Jacob likely died between Oct 15, 1855 and
April 11, 1859 because Deed Book 25, page 321 lists the last land transaction by Jacob and “Easter” Shouse,
while Deed Book 27, page 11 lists the first distribution of Jacob’s property to his heirs.

Relationship with Christian and Abraham Shouse:
      · 1790 census - Christian Shouse lived in Fayette Co., KY
      · 1800 census - Christian Shouse lived in Madison Co., KY (at the time, Madison Co. included Estill Co. and
part of Powell Co. that are immediate south of Levee, Montgomery Co. today)
      · 1800 tax roll - Jacob Shouse lived in Madison Co., KY
      · 1810 census - Jacob Shouse lived in Montgomery Co., KY
      · 1810 census - Abraham Shouse lived in Montgomery Co., KY
      · Jacob was 26-45 years old and Abraham was 16-25 years old in 1810 - could they have been brothers?
      · 1810-1870 census - no Shouse lived in Madison Co, KY (though its size had progressively been reduced)
      · 1818 - first known deed transaction by Jacob Shouse in Montgomery Co, KY (Deed Book 9, page 27)

Married:
      · Esther (aka Ester in some deed books) was first mentioned and as wife in 1821 Montgomery Co., KY Deed
    Book 10, page 104
      · Jacob married Esther sometime around 1800 because he had four children under age 10 in 1810 census,
unless Esther was his second wife whom he married sometime between 1810 and 1821. There are
undocumented references on the INTERNET (GenForum and Family Search) to a Jacob Shouse of
Woodford, KY marrying Susannah Hogby on March 1, 1797 (or 1795), but I have no documentation to this
fact nor that this Jacob is the same as “my” Jacob, though it could be possible. Also, there was a Jacob
Shouse who married Susannah Woodall on March 18, 1801 in Madison Co., KY.
      · Esther was born about 1776 - she was 84 during the 1860 census - living with Ezekial Rose and family to
whom she had given power-of-attorney on March 29, 1860 (Deed Book 27, page 429)
      · Esther died between 1860 and 1864 - listed in 1860 census, while dower first described in Deed Book 28,
    page 11 (February 27, 1864)

Documented Children:
      · 1810 census: three boys and one girl under 10 years old
      · 1840 census: one boy and girl each 15-20 years old (also a boy under 5 who could have been a grandchild,
or the son one of the boys and/or one of the girls)
      · Because early census commonly contained errors and many non-family members at the residence were
recorded as part of the family, Jacob had a minimum of three boys and a girl, but could have had at least four
boys and three girls. If we assume that the census records are correct, then Jacob could have had three boys
and a girl during the period 1800-1810, and a boy and two girls during the period 1820-1825.

1. Andrew Shouse/Shoush - b. 1803; d. 1860 (after)
      · Recorded in Deed Book 27, page 11 that the sale of land by Andrew Shoush that once belonged “...to
the estate of Jacob Shoush deceased, the said Andrew Shoush being one of the children and heir of him
    the said Jacob Shoush dec@...”)
      · Listed as a child without documentation in the files of Hazel Boyd
2. William H. Shoush, Sr. - b. 1807; d. April 28, 1878
      · Recorded in Deed Book 27, page 89 that sale of parcel of land “...which tract of land was the property
of Jacob Shoush, the father of the said William Shoush Sr...”
      · Listed as a child without documentation in the files of Hazel Boyd
3. Julia G. Shouse/Shoush
      · Recorded in Deed Book 27, page 89 that “Abraham Lonas and Julia G. Lonas his wife, late [formerly]
Julia G. Shoush, of Montgomery and state of Ky...” were granted interest “... in and to the Estate of
    Jacob Shoush dec@...”
      · Listed as a child without documentation in the files of Hazel Boyd
4. Henry Shouse/Shoush
      · Recorded in Deed Book 27, page 364 that Henry Shoush, as an heir, was issued the deed for a parcel of
land that had belonged to the deceased Jacob Shoush
      · Recorded in Deed Book 28, page 37 that some land that was sold was “...one undivided interest in the
dower of Mrs. Easter Shoush, belonging to Henry Shoush...”
      · Listed as a child without documentation in the files of Hazel Boyd

Good Candidates as Children:
    1. Sarah Shouse/Shoush - b. 1817; d. after 1889
      · No direct proof that Sarah (Sally) was a child of Jacob, but definitely related (niece?)
      · Age nearly fits with 15-20 year old girl with Jacob and Esther in 1840
      · More than one girl in the family besides Julia because of census records and it was recorded in Deed
Book 27 on page 89 that “... said Julia G. being one of the children and heir of the said deceased [Jacob
Shouse], is entitled to one equal share with her brothes [interpreted as “brothers” because of writing
    style] and sisters...”
      · Recorded in Deed Book 28 on page 11 that Sally Smith received land from the dower of “Easter
Shoush.” The deed was accepted by James Smith (husband).
2. Hezekiah M. Shoush - b. November 26, 1818; d. July 11, 1903
      · No direct proof that Hezekiah was a child of Jacob, but definitely related (nephew?)
      · Age nearly fits with 15-20 year old boy with Jacob and Esther in 1840
      · Sally (Sarah) Smith and Hezekiah were siblings because of information on an undated photograph of
Sally Smith that Hezekiah once owned. On the back of a 4"x 6" cabinet card photo is the inscription
“Sally Smith, Grandpa Shoush’s sister,” which was written by May Shoush Buchanan, daughter of John
Thomas Shoush and granddaughter of Hezekiah. From the type of photo, and Sally’s clothes and hair
style, the photo was taken about 1880 or so by a commercial photographer in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky
(printed on back). Geneva Ross, niece of May Buchanan, has the photo and identified the hand writing
as that of her aunt May.
      · Born in Montgomery Co., KY, then moved to MO between 1854 and 1855.
      · No mentioned in the Deed Books of Montgomery Co., KY

Other Candidates as Children:
1. Robert Shouse - b. 1809; d. 1883
            · Only appeared in the 1830 census and was 20 to 30 years old, same as William Shoush who lived next
door at the time. Both were married, but no children were listed. Andrew appeared on the next census
page. Robert may have died or moved before the 1840 census - never recorded again in the
Montgomery Co. or Bath Co. census.
            · A Robert Shouse m. Nancy Gordon before 1858, according to Some Marriages in Mont. Co., KY
Before 1864 by Hazel Mason Boyd. Rather late in life for one of Jacob’s children, unless a second wife.
            · Listed in the files of Hazel Mason Boyd as a child of Jacob without documentation - birth and death
      dates given without documentation
2. Thomas J. Shouse
      · Listed in the files of Hazel Mason Boyd as a child of Jacob without documentation
      · The only mention of a Thomas J. Shouse in Montgomery Co. or Bath Co. is in Some Marriages in
Mont. Co., KY Before 1864 by Hazel Mason Boyd, which indicated that a Thomas J. Shouse m. Jane
Kinney before 1859, which is somewhat late in life for one of Jacob’s children, unless a second wife.

on September 9, 1875 and had two daughters (Kate Ellis - d. January 1, 1904 and Anna
            Otis - b. November 6, 1883; d. November 11, 1905).
                      · Anna O. Shouse married Robert E. Young in 1902 and lived in Flemingsbourgh, KY

    c. Ben F. Shouse
                      · Ben F. Shouse moved to OK (files of Hazel Boyd)
                      · Found the following undocumented information from Sid Shouse (dated July 28, 2000) on
the INTERNET that may or may not be about the same Ben as above:
                      · Benjamin F. Shouse, Sr. - b. 1843 in Woodford Co., KY; d. March 1889 in Caldwell
Co., MO. Lived for a while around 1885 in OK. Also had a son, Ben F. Shouse, Jr.,
            who was born about 1880.
    d. Anderson Shouse
                      · Anderson died in OK at the home of Ben - buried in Machpebah (sp?) cemetery, Mt.
Sterling, KY (files of Hazel Boyd)
                      · Anderson Shouse died May 31, 1906, at the home of his brother Ben F. Shouse in OK
(according to Hazel Boyd, information from Mt. Sterling Democrat and Mt. Sterling
Advocate). He was 48 years old. Buried in Macpelah Cemetery. Son of late Wm.
            Shouse.
    e. Cleopatra Shouse
                      · Cleopatra married J. L. Shouse (according to the files of Hazel Boyd). This seems to have
been based on information from the Mt. Sterling Democrat and the Mt. Sterling Advocate.
                      · Mrs. Cleopatra Shouse, wife of James R. Shouse of Salt Lick, died on November 26,
1891. Only daughter of William J. Shouse of Levee, abt. 30 yrs. old. A Methodist.

Dickerson and wife, Mrs. Press Jackson and Mrs. W. R. Stevens.
                      · However, Montgomery Co. KY Vital Records (from Judy Lee Means, Jeffersonville, KY)
states that Cleopatra married Henry R. C. Greenwade on October 3, 1873 at the home of
W.J. Shouse - father born in Montgomery Co., KY and mother in Greenup Co., KY. An
undocumented sources states that they had a children, Myrtle May, who was born in 1879

2. William H. Shoush, Sr. - b. January 13,1807 (KY); d. April 28, 1878 (Macon Co., MO)
        · Much of the following information is from Gail Shoush, Macon, MO, unless otherwise stated
        · According to Some Marriages in Montgomery Co., KY Before 1864 by Hazel Boyd, Susan married
William in 1827. Gail Shoush, however, indicates that Susan was born in September 12, 1818, and died
December 26, 1875, which means there is a mistake someplace, otherwise she was 9 years old when
married. In support of the marriage in 1827, William was listed as 20-30 years old in the 1830 census
and his wife was 15-20 years old (no children). They had a boy and girl each between 5 and 10 years of
age in 1840 and two sons under 5 years old in 1840.
        · At least one son by the name of William Shoush, Jr, (Deed Book 27, page 89)

            · Interesting to note the commonality of given names themes among families. For example, a young
woman by the name of Temperance (b. 1835) was staying with Andrew Shouse in 1860, Hezekiah had a
daughter by the name of Chastiny (b. abt. 1847). Also, there are Hezekiah, Obediah, Jacob, and
