The Story
Charlie Newell has inherited a ranch from his uncle Max, who has been missing for five years. When he explores the barn, he finds a tunnel that leads to a parallel universe - one where Man does not inhabit the earth.
Charlie catches some passenger pigeons, which are not extinct on the "wildside", and uses the money he gets from selling them anonymously to zoos to start his big project: digging for gold in Colorado. With his four friends Marie, Carla, Rick and Joey, he starts the operation. They soon run into dangerous problems.
Evaluation
A classical Science Fiction story, where a single assumption (in this case, the gate to a parallel Earth) is followed to its logical conclusion. The story is believable and almost impossible to put down.
