Online
ESL resources to get you started with your own personal self-study program.
This list of ESL study resources is meant only an introduction and not
complete. You can find more resources in any of these areas by doing a simple
internet search using keywords (grammar, exercises, quizzes, listening
practice, etc.).
NONE
of these resources will help you unless you use them and practice regularly.
Book-marking a page for future reference but not using it by studying handouts
or working practices exercises is a waste of time and teaches nothing.
Take
an assessment test to determine your level and weak areas. Plan to study often.
Every day for a short period is better than “cramming” or study for a single
long period just once or twice a week. Check the study skills pages for tips on
managing your study time and setting up a schedule. Even if you are very busy,
you should be able to find 15-30 minutes a day to study English. You can fit in
practice exercises even if you have no more than 10-15 minutes. Make flashcards
to review while you are waiting in line or for a bus – 5 minutes at a time.
Don’t spend all your time drilling – USE the language skills you are learning
by reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
