VILLAINS: EVOLITES

Explanation

The Clans Rank Field Name Personal Name Creation Types Chart of Evolites

Clan: The actual Evolites are divided up into 10 Clans. Each Clan is led by a single Colonel (with the exception of the Clan of the Den, which has two), and is then composed of Generals and Captains, there always being at least as many Captains as Generals. The Clans are mini communities, where the Clan members often train together and know each other fairly well. With the Clan system, individual Evolites are given both structure and opportunities to interact with others. For though Fauna is a neurotic tyrant, she does care about her followers in a round about fashion, and does keep their well being in mind. There were originally 11 Clans, but a couple of years ago the Clan of the Ape turned renegade, and was completely annihilated. Anyway, the Clans tends to have certain animal affiliates. They are listed below.

However, though all the Clans are devout followers of Fauna, there are certain animosities between certain Clans. These are listed below:

Rank: Among the Evolites, the order of positions are as follows (from highest to lowest): Fauna, Colonels, Generals, Captains, Petty Minions, the ship Crew/Inventors, Peons/Servants, traitors. Obviously Fauna, the founder, leader, and creator of the Evolites, surpasses all the Evolites in authority. When the word Evolite is used, it technically refers to the combatting ranks (Colonel, General, and Captain), though it is sometimes used to encompass all the followers of Fauna. It is the combatting ranks that technically are members of the Clans. All Clans were founded with the creation of a Colonel, but otherwise Fauna is the only one who understands her convoluted method of assigning who which ranking. The ranking among Generals and Captains follows a system where the 1st General is the highest ranked General, immediately followed by the 2nd General, and etc. A 3rd General of the Clan of the Den holds as much authority and privilege as a 3rd General of the Clan of the Scale. One key note however is that though overall the Generals are of higher rank than Captains, there starts to be overlapping at 5th General. Meaning, a 5th General has the same rank as a 1st Captain, although the Colonel Monarch Butterfly of the Swarm is working on changing this so that a 1st Captain is of equal rank to a 3rd General. But this change is still being discussed. It is possible for individuals to be promoted, but only within their class. Hence, it is possible for a 5th Captain to become a 2nd Captain, but never can they acheive the rank of any level of General. On the reverse side, however, it is possible to be demoted to any level, though usually an Evolite found to be lacking is downgraded to a Petty Minion. Only in extreme cases are they placed as a Peon or traitor. Overall, the Generals tend to snub the Captains a little. There are never more than 5 Generals is a Clan, and there are always at least as many Captains as Generals within that Clan.

Affiliated with specific Clans, though not actually part of one, the Petty Minions are followers of Fauna that didn't quite make the cut for being an official Evolite. It is possible for a Petty Minion to be promoted to a Captain, though no higher. Hence they have incentive to do their tasks well. It is acceptable for one from the combat ranks to use the services of a Petty Minion, in any sense of the term. However, doing so does provide some social awkwardness. Petty Minions are usually used for menial fighting tasks, and hence are forced to undergo training. Unlike the official Evolites, the Petty Minions have limited privileges and rights. They are not allowed to go to most recreational regions, such as the Lounges, unless under the supervision of an official Evolite. And they are not allowed to visit off planet unless on a mission. However, they are given the bottom two levels of the ship to do as they please. Meals are eaten in their separate cafeteria, which is simpe fare, but is filling and provides the nutrition they require. At night however, the Petty Minions have a strict curfew (unless enlisted to aid an official Evolite, or on mission) at 11:00 PM and are forced to sleep in their cages. It is a bearable, but unfullfilling life. Hence Petty Minions strive to get promoted and combat ranked Evolites strive to maintain their position.

All who are strictly non-combatants are naturally born, and are refugees who happen to have been recruited to the ship from the various planets that Fauna has conquered. The Crew and Inventors are ranged from being equivalent to the rank of Colonel to same as the Petty Minions or Peons. Of the non-combatants, the Crew and Inventors have some authority. Neither are affiliated with any of the Clans, and are loyal to the society as a whole. The Crew is responsible for maintenance of the ship and everything mechanical and electrical. Without them, the Evolite society would be in complete shambles. They actually deal with the details of keeping everything running. The Inventors' Sororities are divided up into 7 groups, each of which is alternatively given projects to work on. It's a system that makes having teams work on specific tasks a bit more smoothly run. The Inventors are the ship scientists, who come up with new devices and experiments to aid Fauna and her society. Each Sorority is close-knit and there is much rivalry between them. Not much else is known about the Crew or Inventors. They are not given nearly as many privileges as the Evolites, but they live comfortable existences. Besides, they have a relatively high level of immunity, for they firstly don't put themselves in the path of danger, and secondly, Fauna values them. Afterall, they are difficult to replace. She can't just make more Crew and Inventors, like she does with her Evolites.

The unskilled non-combatants fall under the Peon ranking. The Peons are basically slaves. Either they were once outcasts, kidnapped, failures, or previous victims, and are either too imcompetent or untrustworthy enough to be kept away from the ship devices. The majority of them work as servants, providing services such as cleaning, fetching, mending, and other tedious tasks. It is derogatory to refer to them as Peons, which is their ranking. If one values them as a living being, then one refers to them as servants. Many of the Peons weren't initially willing to serve Fauna, for she did come and destroy their home planet (and sometimes system and a good sized chunk of their home galaxy). Many of the servants never had Bright Futures in the first place, so were immune to the direct affects of the Evolite ravagings. However, they had few options in the aftermath, and most resigned to being Peons.

The only ranking below Peon is traitor. A traitor is one who has been deemed a hazard to the well being of the Evolite society. Few fall into this category, and the only en masse incident was when the Clan of the Ape turned renegade. Usually one who falls into this category does not survive the shunning and hostility past a few days. It is impossible to redeem oneself once fallen into this category. The best option is to try putting as much distance between oneself and the Evolites in a brief period of time as is possible.

Field Name: The combat ranks are given two names, their Personal Names (the ones they favor around the ship and the ones they use when they achieve a fake identity) and their Field Names (names that they use when they take on a mission and identify with which animal they feel kinship towards). Example. Annies Personal Name is Annie, and her Field Name is Ant. The only ones who as a rule have both their Field and Personal Names identical are the Colonels. It is just the way Fauna has it set up. The Field Name is the name that goes along with an Evolite's title. For instance, 5th General Vixen is also known as Vickie, the 5th of the Den Generals. She is never called General Vickie. Using the Field Name over the Personal Name indicates professionalism.

Personal Name: Usage of the Personal Name over the Field Name indicates a personable relationship. Hence, which Name is used (and with what inflections) holds crucial connotations concerning the attitudes of certain individuals towards other certain individuals. A Personal Name is like earthlings' first names or nicknames. It is possible to change one's Personal Name, but it rarely done. It never really occurs to the Evolites where their Personal and Field Names come from. They've just always possessed them. It is the will of Fauna and the many Creators.

Creation Type: Not all Evolites have the same origins. Though all are led to believe that they all are natural creatures, who owe their existence to Fauna and the many Creators, they also believe that they have origins on the planet Bona Dea. In fact, only a small portion of the Evolites have Bona Deaan roots. Fauna destroyed most of the life on this unique planet, which by fluke happened to have had its numerous animal species convergently evolve so that they are humanoid, closely resembling earth's homo sapiens. A few stragglers survived, and because of their unique genetic history, they were especially susceptible to Fauna's magics. Hence, she was easily able to manipulate them, erasing all memories of their previous lives and of how she was the cause of their planet's deterioration. They certainly were a valuable supplement to her growing army of Evolite followers. This type of Evolite is known as a Bona Deaan.

However, Fauna is the only one who actually knows what creation type her Evolites actually are. The Evolites themselves are ignorant to the fact that they may have alternative origins. Anyway, most of the Evolites are made by Fauna. Her main method, which combines a human with a animal, has three variations. The model 1's are simply made by Fauna fusing an animal with a human. By fusing, she takes bits of pieces from both until she comes up with a hybrid she finds satisfactory. It leaves both of the original creatures husks of their formal selves, in all aspects. The pain undergone is excrutiating, and the only mercy they are given is the fact that when they die, their cells cease functioning simultaneously so as not to prolong their agony. The second variation is the model 2 method. This is done by placing an animal soul in a hollow human body. This allows the traits of both to emerge, and with the touch of Fauna's magic, enables the newly created Evolite to have the supernatural talents the Evolite society is known for. On the reverse side, the model 3 method is when a human soul is placed in a hollow animal body. Physically, the model 3's resemble the animal they were based on a bit more strongly than the model 2's.

The three hybrid variations are, as mentioned, her main method. However, Fauna has the ability to create two other types of Evolites. The scratch made are created purely from Fauna's magic. This method is the most difficult, and requires the most personal investment. Although each Evolite that Fauna creates is part of her, this is even moreso with the scratch made. The final method of creating Evolites is the dollie method. All that is required is that Fauna uses her unique power over animals to spark life within a doll that resembles whatever animal affiliation she wants. For some reason, this is the method Fauna most detests. Also, for some weird coincidental reason, all the dollies are affiliated with mythological animals. All Colonels are either scratch made or a dollie. There are only a scant number of others who are either type among the rest of the ranks.

The only ones beside Fauna who are privy to the secret of the Evolite origins are Colonel Monarch Butterfly of the Swarm and the Solar Sailor. But only she knows who has which origin. However, it is important to note that the process is far from perfected. Firstly, each trial requires a great deal of investment from Fauna. Even after she figures out what characteristics she desires, she must undergo numerous calculations to deduce which method to attempt. Then further calculations and preparations are required. This is all prior to even attempting the creation of a new Evolite. However, the actual process is just as consuming. It drains Fauna, magically, physically, mentally, and emotionally. She is heavily involved with every part of herself in every aspect of the genesis of a new life. Even after all this is done, at best one in 15 times does she get anything that she is willing to keep as a Petty Minion. There are just two many subtleties and details to have a perfect result every time. About one in 100 times does she manage to create a new Evolite. Even though she has had much practice creating Evolites, the only aspects that have gotten slightly easier is the calculations and pacing herself.
