November 8, 2003
The November 8, 2003, eclipse lasted about 4 hours, but
totality itself lasted only about 24 minutes.
During totality, the southern limb of the moon remained unusually bright
in contrast to the reddish coppery hue of the remainder of the lunar disk. This redness is caused by sunlight that is
filtered and refracted by our atmosphere before it reaches the moon. If you were on the moon at mid-eclipse, you
would be able to see all sunsets occurring on Earth at the same time!
Below is a series of photos depicting the
first half of the eclipse. All times EST and
approximate. Taken
from Bucks County, PA.
October 27-28, 2004 – “World Series” Eclipse
The October
27, 2004, eclipse
occurred during Game 4 of the 2004 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and
St. Louis Cardinals. Much of the latter
half of the game was played under a red-hued moon which, unfortunately, was
hidden by clouds in St. Louis. Coincidentally,
totality ended about 3 minutes after the Red Sox recorded the final out and won
its first Major League Baseball championship since 1918. Totality lasted one hour, 21 minutes.
This was the last
total eclipse of the moon until March 3, 2007, though two partial eclipses will occur
during the intervening years.
All times EDT and approximate. Taken from Arlington, VA.
Clouds and a broken tripod prevented me from recording the entire event.
