A golem’s creator can command it if the golem is within 60 feet and can see and hear its creator. If uncommanded, the golem usually follows its last instruction to the best of its ability, though if attacked it returns the attack. The creator can give the golem a simple program to govern its actions in his or her absence.

Golems do not need to breathe and are immune to most forms of energy.

Construct: Immune to mind-influencing effects, poison, disease, and similar effects. Not subject to critical hits, subdual damage, ability damage, energy drain, or death from massive damage.

Magic Immunity (Ex): Golems completely resist most magical and supernatural effects, except where otherwise noted below.  Chitinous Golems have the type Vermin for any spells which ward against such things, although it recieves a Will saving throw to overcome this restriction, wether the original spell allows for one or not.

Improved Grapple (Ex): A Chitinous Golem may attempt to grapple as a free action whenever it succeeds with a Slam attack, which does not provoke an AoO.

Sting (Ex): These types of golem have a large stinger from a Monsterous Scorpion included in their construction.  Chitinous Golems are considered to be a Monsterous Scorpion of the same size catagory for determinging the strength of the poison.  See Vermin Poison table on page 205 of the Monster Manual for exact details.

Construction:
The golem costs 70,000 gp to create, which includes 2,500 gp for the body. Assembling the body requires a successful Craft (leatherworking or sculpting) check (DC 17). The creator must be 16th level and able to cast arcane spells. Completing the ritual drains 1,400 XP from the creator and requires geas/quest, limited wish, polymorph any object, and poison.

Description

The Chitinous Golem is a thing of nightmares.  First created by the denizens of the underdark out of the discarded shells of monsterously large insectoid creatures, these terrible abominations are more than enough to make one's skin crawl.

The entire golem's body is made from the shells and exoskeletons from countless insects, both of the mundane variety and the monsterous.  The torso, main arms, and the legs are often crafted from the shells of at least two differant umber hulks, sometimes more.  The rest of the golem is built from various pieces from Monsterous Scorpions and Giant Insects, such as giant praying mantis's, wasps, centipedes, and stag beetles.  The head is an angular ellipsoid, sporting a large tearing mouth similar to the giant praying mantis's, and two to eight large multifaceted eyes of varying sizes.  However, this is not the worst of it.  Running down it's sides are a row of what appear to be the legs of a giant spider or beetle, with large scattered hairs.  These legs are constantly flexing and twitching, as if impatient to wrap around something.

Whenever the Chitinous Golem makes a successful Slam attack with it's main arms, which each end in a three fingered fist, it may attempt to wrap these extra arms/legs around the victim in an improved grapple.  When it has a good hold, the golem bring's its most frightening weapon into play, a massive scorpion's stinger built into the it's back.  With this, the golem will attempt to repeatedly sting it's target to make it helpless before tearing in with it's huge jaws.  Although, being a construct, it does not actually feed, it does go through the motions of tearing flesh into small bite sized pieces.

Once this golem has grappled it's prey, it would prefer to finish with it before moving to the next, it will abandon it's current victim after only one or two stings if attacked by another.  Stories from the few people that survive an encounter with these golems are often discounted as fantasy, or as a case of mistaken identity with an actual Umber Hulk or Monsterous Scorpion.  The survivers, however, they know better...
