In any kind of competition we expect the most from our horses.
Maximal performance means an optimal training regime. To achieve this, horses need an adequate diet to meet the requirements for these performances.
During any kind of performance, the horse sweats, which means loss of electrolytes and water. Sweat provides cooling of the skin of the horse. Also substantial loss of electrolytes causes fatigue and muscle weakness.
Thirst is stimulated by a rise of electrolyte concentration in the blood.
Whenever the horse looses large amounts of electrolytes, while not replenished, the concentration in the blood will remain static In other words the horse needs water but it does not have the urge to drink. It will finally become dehydrated.
On not-training days the daily ration of electrolytes should be provided by a well balanced diet.
On training or competition days however, the horse demands an immediate replenishing of electrolytes. |
