I am ancient history
by Edward K Lankford

                        I am ancient history.
                                     I am as old as the pyramids
                                     As distant as Caesar.
                                     I watched Hadrian's Wall crumble
                                     My name etched in hieroglyphics has been stricken.

                                     My face did not launch a thousand ships
                                     I took no sword from any stone
                                     I slew no mother of Grendel
                                     I did not survive the Flood.
                                     But I'm a living legend without the glory;
                                     I'm young with rolling wrinkles.

                                     Once I loved what I thought I could have
                                     But since she left me,
                                     Although she intrudes on my every thought,
                                                                                          breath,
                                                                                          moment,
                                     I know that to her
                                     I am ancient history.
