Many people would like to actively participate in democracy, but they lack the knowledge of how to do it.  One way is to contact your representatives in the government.  You might think that your little opinion will not make that much of a difference, especially if your opinion differs from those voiced by said representatives.  However, your vote does count, and thier jobs depend on getting enough votes to win elections.  Congressmen and Senators are very aware of this.  Even if they don't change their minds on certain issues, the fact that you took the time to write to them tells them that you care about the issue.  If you care, there are bound to be others who care, they just haven't written or called.  This might lead a particular senator to re-think where he stands on certain issues.  If only a few people call or write in, perhaps they will soften thier stance just a little, but if enough people call or write in, perhaps they might even change thier position.  Just don't expect miracles.

When writing to your reps. make sure to include your name and address, so they can verify that you are a constituent of thiers.  Sometimes it helps to (politely) remind them that it is our votes that get them into office.  Also, if there are any issues in which a senator or rep. has voted the way you hoped they would, it is nice to praise them for that particular vote.  Above all, keep things civilized and courteous. Name calling, ranting, and other impolite tactics will do no good (in fact they might even throw the letter away before any body has had a chance to read it).  Well, here's the addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses for Idaho senators and Reps. along with the President.  Have at it, and don't be too disappointed when thay send a letter back justifying why they didn't vote the way you wanted them to.
