THE GEORGE
Pinner, Middlesex
The George was my regular pub for only about one year (1995 to 1996). It was due to Andy and I always drinking Tetley Bitter in this pub that we first became known as the Tetley Boys - a name that seems to have followed uus around from pub to pub.
We had some great times in this pub. Who can forget the crazy lectures of Percy or the time when short sited Ted mistook long-haired Andy for Johnny's lady-friend. Who can also forget having a glass thrown at our table, followed by Matt running around the pub threatening to kill whoever did that!
What about the 'Crystal Maze' game, or the sign that advertised 'Hot teacoffee'?
The best times were in the summer of 1996. It was in this pub that we watched England beat Holland in Euro '96. It was also in this pub that we saw England lose to Germany the following week. Oh well...
The George closed in the autumn of 1996 and re-opened as the Frothfinders & Firkin in the spring of 1997. This pub has never been the same since. I've often wondered how such a great pub could have become such a shit one. To me they are two seperate buildings in two different times. When standing at the left-end of the Firkin's bar its easy to forget that prior to 1997 this was the site of the George's gents!
In late spring 2002 the Frothfinder's & Firkin closed and re-opened as an Arena pub who changed the name back to The George.
I can't remember the exact year the pub was established, as the old sign has long since gone, but I think it was in the 1840s. The pub was named after King George IV, son of 'Mad' King George III. George is a reasonably popular name for a pub, England has had 6 kings called George, and it's patron saint is also called George.
