Expansion Comes to the League The fall of '97 saw the Rangers and Chicago join the league. But the big story was the return of the Devils. Upon rejoining the league the New Jersey GM said "Montrea knows the Devils mean one thing... Losses." To which the Canadiens responded, "No... That's You!" The first games ever played outside of 25 Charina Road kicked off with a series of exhibition matches between the Rangers and Chicago. When the craziness settled it was once again New Jersey against Montreal in the finals. The finals in this 19th season were a classic played in Southboro. With Mr. Campero watching intently, Montreal won the first three games only to have NJ win the next three. In game seven, Pat "The Pepperpot" LaFontaine scored for Montreal to win the cup. Montreal was sent into a frenzy, and Emi said "I hope they don't destroy my shop."
Season 20 was set to kick off with the draught, when the Montreal GM fell and broke his ankle. At the emergency room, upon being told it would be a three hour wait, the GM erupted, exclaiming "I'm not waiting three hours! And I'm not f'ing watching f'ing Friends!" When told that there were people with higher priorities, the GM screamed "I know how it works, I watch the shows!" Montreal's unraveling became more evident later in the playoffs. When facing Edmonton, the Oilers were trailing 3-0 in game six. Then the Oilers struck for six goals, including two on the controversial pass-shot. The Montreal GM screamed at the Oiler GM, eventually throwing him out of his house. The craziness continued. When told the finals would be played on Kelton Street, the Devils home ice, Montreal said "That's because (Ajay) is a loser." The pressure had gotten to the Canadiens, and the Devils dispatched them to reclaim the cup for the first time in 12 seasons.
League at the Turn of the Century The league made a come back in the summer of '99. The Penguins joined the league and faced the Habs in a brotherly showdown. While the brothers had played 82-game seasons versus each other, they had never faced off for the cup. The series went seven games, with Pittsburgh instituting "The Towel" in order ot keep his hands dry during the matches. Despite the technique, Montreal won in seven. Montreal faced New Jersey in the finals, and were up 3-2 when the Pens got some revenge. The Pittsburgh GM walked in the room and uttered the infamous phrase "You stink" to the Montreal GM. Montreal started to crack under the continued heckling of "you're awful" and "eat it". New Jersey went on to beat a shaken Montreal team in seven.
Year 2000 brought the return of the Nordiques and a new Blues franchise. The first round Quebon/Blues match-up was entertaining. Quebec started indulging in Molson XXX at the start of the series while jumping out to a 3 games to 1 lead. Then the Blues shut out Quebec in games 5 and 6. When Quebec fell behind in game 7, the GM started pausing the game and eating pizza crusts in a desparate attempt to sober up. It was too late, and the Blues advanced. This year, the Pens beat the Habs in seven, and then beat the Oilers in the finals to claim their first of two cups.
