ZEDIKIAH CANDLER
~ ©2000 by Ed MarshZed articles:
Zedikiah Candler, b. after 1745 (estimate based on Daniel Candler's will of 1765 that says if Zed marries before age 20 he will be disowned), prob. VA, d. after 1820, prob. TN (he was on the 1820 Smith County, TN fed. census)m. 18 April 1772, Bedford Co, VA, Anna Moorman, b. 18 Nov 1756, Louisa Co, VA, d. 1804, prob. Bedford Co, VA
Order of children is not certain so I use order of marriage:
Elizabeth Candler, b. 1770's
m. 8 Feb 1790, Bedford Co, VA, Thomas Robertson/Robinson (still married in 1808 -- estate settlement of Anna Moorman Candler)
Zachariah Moorman Candler, b. c1733, prob. Bedford Co, VA, d. 23 July 1844,NC
m1. 10 Feb 1791, Bedford Co, VA, Rachel Thornhill, b. c1744
m2. 9 Apr 1793, Green Co, KY, Rhoda Pelham (Green Co. marriage book #1, says, "groom, Zachariah Moman Candler..." She was the daughter of Francis and Nancy Pelham. Rhoda remarried as Rhoda Candler in 1798 to a
Mr. Carlisle, also in Green Co. KY)
m3. c1800, (tradition says in SC), Mary "Polly" Boon, b. 30 Apr 1784,
Surrey Co, NC, d. 3 Dec 1857, Candler, NC.
Nancy Candler, b. 1770's, prob. Bedford Co, VA
m. 15 Oct 1795, Bedford Co, VA, Peter Pelter
John Candler, b. 1770's, d. after 1847 (last DeKalb Co, TN land sale on Dry Creek)
Marriage??? -- it has been a tradition that he did not, but I found a Martha Candler who joined the Salem Baptist Church of Smith Co, TN in 1810, and a John Candler joined the same in 1812. This part of Smith (very close to Wilson County line) became DeKalb Co, TN by 1850. Martha Candler was listed on the 1850 census of TN (DeKalb Co.) as age 61 and born in SC.
Martha died in 1851 and left land on Dry Creek to her sister Ruth Harben (widow of W. B. Harben). No other heirs were name.
There are several land deeds to/from John Candler on Dry Creek between 1827 and
1847. In the 1850 fed. census, Ruth Harben, born in NC, widow of W. B. Harben,
was age 45.
Shown as living next to John Candler of Wilson County, TN on 1829-1832 tax lists (Thomas Partlow's transcription) was one Winston Candler. On the 1840 federal census Winston was in Smith Co. In 1850 he was in Macon County which was separated from Smith and Wilson. His age was 50 (born 1800) and place of birth was VA. Winston named a
daughter Martha and had a son named William whose initials were W. J. Z. Candler. A descendant of his tells me he was called Zed or Zeb. Could this be William John Zedikiah Candler?
Placing Winston's birth in 1800, and assuming he was the son of Martha and John, I place their marriage in 1800.
Falby/Falba Candler, b. 1770's
marriage:
Claimed her child was the son of William Dickinson of Bedford County, VA.
The child's name was William Candler, b. c1798. This William Candler moved to Kanawha County, VA (later WV) and worked in William Dickinson's salt works. William Candler of Kanawha County changed his name to William Dickinson, Jr. and died in 1888, a respected citizen of Kanawha Co., West Virginia.

Will of Jos. Dickinson, father of William Dickinson, grandfather of
illegitimate son William Candler
Bedford Co. Will Book 5, Page 37
Dickerson, Joseph - Will
Signed April 2, 1818
Recorded September 28, 1818
...8. I give to William Candler son of Polly Candler and refuted
son of William Dickerson my Negro man Will to him and his heirs forever.
[Ed Marsh's comment:
The will was misread/mistranscribed, her name was Falby. William Dickenson bought up most of Anna (Moorman) Candler's heir's interest in Zack Moorman's estate after her death in 1804.
I find it fascinating that this man, with whom Falby is reported to have had a child, bought up all this interest. Whether it was a discreet way for him to give money to the Candler family to support his son I don't know.
In 1808, Zed gave five slaves in a deed of trust against a debt he owed Wm. Dickenson to be sold to pay the debt, and the residue to come back to Zed. Two of these slaves were named Frank and Lucy. On the 1810 census, Frank Freeman (free black) was living on Candler's Mt. next to Henry Candler (and many otherCandlers). In 1820, Lucy Freeman was head of that household. The Freeman cemetery on the Mt. is on the original Candler Land Grant (signed by Thom. Jefferson in 1779).

Mahaly/Mahala Candler, b. 1770's, prob. Bedford Co, VA -- she sold her interest in Anna (Moorman) Candler's estate in July of 1805
m. 23 Sep 1802, Bedford Co, VA, William Crowder
They moved to Smith County, TN (same as father Zed and brother John) and appear on the 1820 cesus there. I'm just beginning to research through this Crowder line.
Sally Candler, b. 1770's-80's
m1. 16 May 1803, Bedford Co, VA, Grief Wright (in Apr of 1806, Sally sold her interest in Anna (Moorman) Candler's estate to Wm. Dickenson.
Interestingly, she was named as Sally "Candler" -- not Sally Wright. Also
(see next marriage) Thomas Holland was a witness to this estate settlement.
m2. 25 Sep 1806, Franklin Co, VA, Thomas Holland [Marriage Bonds of Franklin Co, VA, 1786-1858, pg. 120, "Holland, Thos. and Sally
Candler,Sept. 25,1806. Sur. Zedekiah Candler."]
Rachel Candler, b. 1770's-80's -- she sold her interest in Anna (Moorman) Candler's estate on Feb. of 1806
m. 31 March 1803, Bedford Co, VA, Samuel Colebourn

Comments:
1] All dates above given in vague terms [ie 1770's] are approximations.
All other dates are from documented sources -- although I do not always cite these sources. The marriages are all from the Bedford County Marriages as copied into Hinshaw's Encyclopedia of American Quaker
Genealogy, v. 6. unless otherwise stated.
2] Zachariah Moorman Candler apparently never sold his interest in his mother's estate.
3] Zachariah Moorman Candler is said to have married Polly Boon in SC.
It is curious to me that his brother, John of Wilson Co, TN) was also (probably) married to a girl born in SC. Zack and Polly began their
family about the same time that John and Martha did.
