COMMENTARY
Archer J. [Jessee] Candler, b. 1835, is listed in the Candler-Stovall Family Bible as born Oct. 9, 1835. He was the son of George Washington Candler (1809-1899) and Dicy Jessee, and the grandson of John Candler, Jr. (1765-1832) and Dorothy Stovall. Here in 1850, he is listed (p. 221) in the household of his aunt and uncle, Archer and Eunice (Dyer) Jessee, and he is also listed in the household of his father (pg. 229, household #152). He later moved to Texas. |

William Buford Candler (1814-1892) - misspelled Bluford here - was the son of Daniel Candler, Sr. (1788-1860), and grandson of James Candler, Sr. (1756-1826) of Bedford/Campbell Co, VA. The actual census schedule says, "wife, Susan - age 32; daughter Judy - 5 (b. c1845?), son Achilles - age 2 (b. c1848); and Mildred - age 3 mos. Also living with Susannah and Buford was Robert Johnson - age 86 (her uncle). In Quaker records I find "Robert Johnson, son of William and Susanna, born 18th May, 1765." A fellow Candler researcher tells me he never married; and that he was the "Robin" Johnson reported to have been one of the last three South River Quakers (along with Buford's father Daniel, and William "Will" Davis). |
Daniel (Webster) Candler, Jr. (1829-1881), son of Daniel, Sr., (1788-1860), grandson of James Candler, (c1756-1826). He married, Frances Ann Baumgardener in 1861. |
Dorothy Stovall (1778-1855) married John Candler, Jr. in Campbell Co, VA in 1799. He was already living in Russell Co, VA since about 1795-96. They returned there to live. John died in 1832. She was living in the household of her daughter, Elizabeth (1803-1876), wife of Vincent Jessee (1800-1877). |
Geo. Washington Candler (1809-1899), son of John Candler and Dorothy Stovall was born Nov. 17, 1809 in Russell Co, VA. His wife, Dicy Jessee (1815-1883), was the daughter of Archer Jessee (1776-1882) and Nancy Browning (1781-1826). |
Henry Candler, b. April 27, 1797, was listed here as "age 53." He was living near John W. Candler, "age 53". These are sons of James Candler, Sr. (c1756-1826). Henry's wife was Jane Dawson who was born c1817, but this schedule says, "wife Jane - age 53." |
Henry Candler, b. Aug 1777, "age 72", was the son of William Candler (1751-1830's), and grandson of John Candler, Sr. (c1730-1802). He was living right next-door to his brother, William A. Candler, "age 53." |

Four James Candlers |
James #8 was a 23 year-old blacksmith, and lived with William Scott (age 38). I once suspected that this was the same person as James A. Candler (son of James C. Candler #10 below) who was listed as age 22 - a blacksmith. However, on the 1860 census one finds James A. Candler (blacksmith) and a James M. Candler (also a blacksmith). So, the father of James. M. Candler remains a mystery. Johnson Candler, b. 1789 (son of James and Agnes (Johnson) Candler) had a son who was 0-5 years old on the 1830 census. This James could be his son. |
James #9 lived a few houses away from James C. #10. This is the James D. Candler who married Mary Ann Padgett (Campbell Co. Marriage book: 10 Feb 1841). His wife (on the Census) is listed as Mary A. -age 25 (b. c1825). Robert A. Russell said that he was the father of Mallie Candler and that he was the son of James and Agnes Candler, but the census date for his birth, c1818, would make that impossible. However, I think that this birth date is wrong. On the 1840 census, James D. Candler is listed as unmarried and age 40-50. |
James C. Candler is listed as 52 years of age and married to Mary - age 56. Children are: Agnes and Ann, twins, age 31; Frances age 26, and James A. Candler, age 22, a Blacksmith. I believe that this is a son of William Candler and Agnes Guthrie. |
James H. - James Henry Candler (1816-1899) was the son of Daniel Candler, Sr. (1788-1860), and grandson of James Candler, Sr. (1756-1826) of Bedford/Campbell Co, VA. He was listed as "age 31". His wife: Mary E. age 26, Children: Wesley [Leslie] age 5, Rebecca age 4, Benj. T. age 2, and Caroline M. 6 mos. |
John Candler, (age 19) (age 33) lived with Alausau Winston. The Winston household was immediately next to that of Martha Candler #16. On the 1860 census, living with Martha Candler #16, there is a John W. Candler age 26, and wife Sarah age 24. This leads me to believe that this John was Daniel and Martha (King) Candler's son. |
John Woodson Candler (1795-1859), was the son of James Candler, Sr. (1756-1826), and grandson of John Candler, Sr. (c1730-1802) of Bedford/Campbell Co, VA., (and great-great-grandfather of your host at this site). |
John N. Candler #14 is most likely John W. Candler, the son of Thomas Jefferson Candler (1801-1830), and grandson of John Candler, Jr. (1765-1832) of Russell Co, VA. Wirt County is in present-day WV - on the Hughes River, which feeds into the Little Kanawha, which in turn feeds into the Ohio River at Parkersburg. |
Joseph B. Candler, (c1823-1885), was the son of Daniel Candler, Sr. (1788-1860), and grandson of James Candler, Sr. (1756-1826) of Bedford/Campbell Co, VA. |
Martha (nee King) Candler (c1794-1886). In 1817, she married Daniel Candler (1784-1839, son of William , 1751-c1836). Daniel's will of 1839 says, "settle my estate and buy my wife a house in town. Notice that Martha and John Candler (#12) are listed as residents of "Lynchburg." I believe that Martha was John's mother. There was a John W. Candler, age 26, living with her on the 1860 census |
Singleton Candler, (1814-1899) son of John Candler, Jr. His wife was Adaline Harriet Boswell and they had eight children at this time (they would eventually have eleven). |
William A. Candler, b. 1795, son of William Candler of Virginia (1751-1836), grandson of John Candler, Sr. |
