Spain and Me

I studied at
the  Escuela Oficial de Idiomas de Madrid (Official Language School of Madrid),  Spain and took courses at the  Universidad de Salamanca, Spain. I graduated from the  University of California, at Santa Barbara and the University of California, at Los Angeles.

I was never bored in Spain. On weekends, I went to the countryside with friends, to parties or discotheques. There are hundreds of  "bares" to visit. After work or classes, every one goes to "bares" to have a little "vino tinto" (red wine) and eat a little "tapas" (snacks), but the major feature of going to a bar is "charlar" (talking). Spaniards love to talk and smoke. (May be Spain is getting a little smoke-free now.)

I love "tapas." They remind me of Chinese food. Spaniards eat everything, similar to Chinese. I still remember the delicious taste of some of the "tapas" such as "patatas bravas" and "mejillones a la mayonesa" (muzzles
with mayonnaise). I get dizzy easily, so usually I drink a type of juice called "mosto" which is smooth like good white wine.

In the afternoon, I liked to have "pasteles" (pastries) with tea or "café con leche" in the "plaza mayor" (a grand arcaded square in the center of town).  On Saturday or Sunday morning, I had "churros con chocolate." Spanish chocolate drink is out of this world when dipping "churros" in it.  During Christmas season, Spaniards eat a kind of candy called "turrón." Spanish food is one of the best in the world. A few that I like are "paella de marisco," "cocido madrileňo," "cordero asado a la brasa," (barbecued lamb), bacalao" (salted codfish), "trucha de Albarracin" (trout), and  "jamón Serrano" (a kind of ham cured in high mountains),  Spain has everything that the world can give us. However, if you do not speak Spanish, you miss out a lot on the culture and social interaction.

A Poem in Three Languages

The Red Wheelbarrow
So much depends
upon
a red wheel

Tanto depende
de
una carretilla roja
abrillantada por la lluvia
