The Miss Australia Awards were examined by a University of Queensland researcher, seeking contributions from the public. Professor Kay Saunders from UQ's School of History, Philosophy, Religion and Classics. She wanted to speak to entrants, family members, supporters, chaperones, sponsors or those associated with the Spastic Centres of Australia. I particularly want to speak to people affected with cerebral palsy who were involved in the running of the awards. Professor Saunders was examining Inventing Perfect Australian Womanhood: The Miss Australia Awards and the Role of Disability in Postwar Australia.
The Miss Australia Quest, ran from 1954 until waning public interest resulted in its demise in 2000, it was the most popular and successful charitable event in Australian history. It was celebrated in a National Museum of Australia exhibition, Miss Australia: A Nation's Quest, which is shown at the Museum of Brisbane before it travels around Australia.
Museum of Brisbane (MoB) is set to premiere a new National
Museum of Australia exhibition exploring the glamour, golden years and changing
notion of ideal Australian womanhood associated with the Miss Australia Quest.
Miss Australia: A Nation's Quest, showed at MoB from 6 October 2006 until
the 4th of February 2007, it traces the history of the competition, from its
beginnings as a magazine promotion in 1908, to its ascendancy as a national
cultural event and its end in 2000.
Jennifer Hawkins was born on the 22nd of December 1983 and was a winner of the 2004 Miss Universe pageant in Quito, Ecuador on June 1. Born in Newcastle, Australia, she was a former cheerleader for the Newcastle Knights rugby league team, and the Hunter Pirates basketball teams, and then a sometime model. It was as a model that she was cast as Miss Australia for the Miss Universe competition.
