Government

Japan is a constitutional monarchy. The emperor is only the symbol of the state. He does not work in the government.

This is the Diet Building.

It has a parliamentary form of government.  The elected legislature is called the National Diet.  There is the upper house called the House of Councilors and the lower house is called the House of Representatives. Elections for the lower house are every four years.  The elections are every three years for half of the upper house.  These members of the Diet vote on all of the laws for the country.  The Diet legislators elect a prime minister from among themselves.

Japan wants world peace for all.  The system of government was founded on the Constitution of Japan called the Peace Constitution.  The constitution decided the role of the emperor, the rights and duties of the people, responsibilities of the different branches of government and other rules about how the government operates.

While having a walking tour through the Diet Building I learned Japan has a democratic system of government where all adults ages 20 and older have the right to vote and run in elections.
