Site Visit - 2001

Following the presentation at our AGM about the Millenium Link, a visit to the Union Canal was this year's attraction. We had lunch at the Bridge Inn, Ratho

Although the Union Canal is a contour canal and consequently has no locks, it does have several aqueducts (and a tunnel at the Falkirk end). This is us going over one of the smaller aqueducts above the B7030 from Newbridge to Wilkieston

The next aqueduct is much higher and crosses the River Almond although it is still less spectacular than the one across the River Avon between Linlithgow and Polmont. Here we tied up for a brief stop to explore the aqueduct.

This gives an impression of the height. The website of British Waterways Scotland gives you more information about the Canal and the other Canals in Scotland, who built them and when.

Some of us looking at the water level control mechanism in the middle of the aqueduct.

Back on board the "Ratho Princess".

Looking down on the River Avon.

The main Edinburgh - Glasgow motorway (M8) runs beside the canal for a stretch. The canal boat does feel a much more relaxed way to travel!

Back at Ratho. Nobody was seasick!
