10th meeting, Gateway Centre, North Methven Street, Perth
At 7:30pm Thursday 5th September 2002.

1: Chairperson: Kirsten Paterson.

Kirsten opened the meeting at 7:30pm and welcomed all present. She advised members of the fire alarm and evacuation procedure and the parking provisions at PKAVS Gateway Centre.

Kirsten also asked that all attending should remember to fill in the attendance register.

The format of the meeting was outlined as District business first, our guest speaker for the evening followed by tea/coffee and chat to colleagues. Members taking tea or coffee were asked to make a donation towards the costs.

1:1. Minutes of Meeting from 4th April 2002:

Kirsten asked if all had received their copy of the last minutes? All had received copies.

The minutes of the last meeting were passed as true and correct.

Proposed by Joan Goddard and seconded by Bob Stainton.

1:2. Matters Arising:

There were no matters arising from the previous minutes.

1:3. Secretary’s Report:

Correspondence: It was reported that 15 emails had been received mainly from District committee members regarding meetings and programme. Letter from Branch Chairman, Richard Lovering, regarding District application. All correspondence is available to members during the tea break following the main meeting.

OHSAS Managing Asbestos Seminars

Karen Niven of OHSAS, had contacted the District advising of seminars they are holding on the 8th October at Rosyth and 10th October at Dundee. The seminars are free and available to all, pre-booking required. Full details and booking forms are available in handouts. Please take one after the meeting or contact the secretary for a copy.

1.4 District/Branch Liaison Report.

Brian Pill gave an update on the current status of the District application, advising that it is now well on its way having been passed to the M & F committee for approval. Letters have also been set to other Branch’s for comment prior to being passed to Council for final decision. Hopefully we shall hear in the not too distant future.

 

1.5 Members Items

Kirsten asked if there where any issues that members would like to raise or areas of concern that they might like information or guidance on. Although members present may not have all the answers, from the combined experience and knowledge gathered together at the meeting it was very likely that advice and or direction could be obtained. The sharing of information and willingness to help each other being an important part of IOSH, Kirsten encouraged members to use this slot to raise any issues.

National IOSH AGM: 15th November 2002 at Murrayfield.

H&S Seminar 08:45 – 15:00 Topic MSD’s, followed by AGM, followed by IOSH dinner dance.

Cost for morning seminar - yet to be advised, cost for dinner/dance £50.00 plus vat.

2. Guest Speaker: Mr. Stewart Jenkinson

Kirsten introduced the Guest Speaker, Stewart Jenkinson, Health and Safety Manager at Edinburgh Zoo.

Stewart opened his talk by indicating that his aim this evening was not to cover Health and Safety legislation and its implications for the Society. But to look at some of the aspects of health and safety which, when you think of a Zoo do not readily spring to mind. This was certainly the case as Stewart continued to describe the diversity of health and safety management issues within the Zoo Park. Main areas covered included:

3. Vote of Thanks:

Sandy Chisholm thanked Stewart on behalf of the members for his interesting, wide-ranging, most enjoyable and humorous talk. The large number of questions posed from the members present clearly indicating the interest and attention that Stewart had generated.

The members present responded with a warm round of applause to show their appreciation.

Stewart was presented with a small token of appreciation on behalf of the District.

5. Closure

Kirsten brought the meeting to a close by thanking all for their attendance and participation, she reminded all that tea / coffee was available and encouraged all to part take, mingle and chat and bade all a safe journey home.
