1.0 CHAIRMAN Brian Pill, FIOSH
The Chair was taken by B Pill. Welcome was extended to all, particularly new Members and Guests. Mention was made of the good turn out and the excellence of the buffet. The reason and format of the meeting being briefed to include an interest Speaker, an address by the Institution's President, annual elections, presentations and accounts.
1.0 GUEST SPEAKER: Mr. Malcolm Cant - Illustrated talk on Old Edinburgh
Old Edinburgh
Malcolm Cant took the first slot aiming as he stated to "entertain the members whilst their lunch went down". He said he had been asked to make a presentation to a very wide variety of audiences in the past, within almost as wide a variation of venues and most of the problems revolved around the issue of utilising 35 mm slides and hence having to shut out the daylight. He felt however that the worst condition was being asked to present an illustrated talk on the 22nd June, at 12.00 midday to a group in a hospital in a conservatory. This resulted eventually in presenting his talk to a group of people, sat two across and about 50 deep all sat in a corridor, as this was the only way they could find to prevent the problems of too much daylight. Hence he felt the chance to make the presentation today in Donaldsons, where there were heavy curtains up to the windows, was in fact a real treat for him.
Introduction
The development of Edinburgh over the past few decades has seen quite considerable change some ups and some downs, but he aimed during his presentation to try and show some of the origins going back to the 16th century by use of picture of etchings and drawing as well as the picture taken in much later times, to show just how Edinburgh has developed
Summary
The speaker then summarised his presentation but showing a few of the images of poor working conditions endure within the factories and the somewhat dubious food hygiene conditions exhibited by what was then thought to be the best in terms of food supply from Liptons. An aerial image of Donaldsons rounded of the slide presentation.
The Chairman made a Vote of Thanks.
2.0 CHIEF EXEXUTIVE :
The Institution - by Mr. Rob Strange, Chief Executive of IOSH
The Institution
Rob Strange the Chief Executive of IOSH took the second slot and started by stating he felt he ought to offer apologies to the members. His presentation he felt was not likely to be anywhere near as interesting as the pervious speaker was as he had the more formal part to talk about.
He then indicated why he was attending the AGM, as it was normally the President. But as the members were probably aware, Mike Garstang the president elect last year had to choose between a board appointment and the IOSH Presidency and he chose the Board Appointment. In accepting the Presidency for a second term, Paul Faupell had it agreed with Council that he would not repeat his trips to the 25 Branches which he had visited during his first term of office, and this gave the opportunity for the Chief Executive to come in his place, which Rob had done willingly.
He intended in the next 30 minutes or so to provide an overview of the IOSH Committee structure and the Departmental Roles within IOSH together with an insight to the achievements over the 2001/2002 period achievements which he emphasised were not his or the HQ staff, but the achievement in the main by the full team of IOSH including the hard working volunteers.
The Chairman made a Vote of Thanks and a small presentation.

5.0 CHAIRMAN'S REPORT
Brian commented that it had been another year of trying to keep you all up to date with all the changes going on within our profession. To do this took time and a lot of effort from your committee, not only here and at our executive meetings but many hours of their own time. He thanked them for their time, and effort and commitment to the Edinburgh Branch and its members and asked them to keep up this excellent work for the betterment of our members and profession.
All the work of a committee had to be co-ordinated and we had to thank our secretary for his dedication to the Branch and members. On our behalf he had lost many hours on the golf course but you could say we had saved him pounds in green fees.
We now had a District in waiting --The Forth and Tay District of the Edinburgh Branch. A lot of members had put a lot of effort into getting the district to where it is today. We had a seminar on Working at Heights which was a great success and we could look forward to more run by us here in Scotland.
Donaldson's with good parking, train station just up the road and bus stops out side ( MSP s in their new home could not boast that) had again looked after us really well even during their building and maintenance programme, and once again we thanked them.
He thanked the members for their continued support to their Branch. He had one request - that they try and encourage more members to come along to the meetings. With the District we had in the region of 55 members attending out of some 700 and it would be good to get the numbers up.

The new Chairman congratulated the new Executive Members for their successful elections and stressed that the work to ensure a success in the coming years was just about to start.
He introduced himself briefly to the members outlining something of his work history and his involvement in occupational health and safety.
After training as a Mechanical & Production Engineer within the Motor trade his career path took him through the usual wide variation of occupations including Sales Engineer, Design & Development Engineer, Technical sales engineer, a wide range of Training Officer roles and eventually becoming a Safety Engineers role as a second string to his bow. He had been able to grow up with the Health & Safety at Work Act.
He subsequently worked in a variety of places including RoSPA The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents based at Birmingham Training Centre for 7 years.
That was prior to joining Mercury Communications nearly 14 years ago and still employed within the Telecomm type of industry, but last year the whole department was outsourced such that he now works for an Occupational Health Safety & Environment consultancy called Praxis42 specializing in providing H&S advice, guidance etc to the high tech industries.
What of the future
He stated that he believed we in the Institution were all here to help each other. Whilst he was working at RoSPA training new Safety Officers, he often used to comment that the helping hand between safety professional was like no other. There was not the bitchy back biting of "I know how to solve that we had the same problem in our Company, but Im not telling you" . In safety well tell each other what we know and if it helps prevent accidents and then we can feel we have really achieved something.
He was in the Chair as your figurehead. In a leader comment from Paul Faupel (our President) in last Decembers Practitioner he stated = "Attending Branch meetings is often the only way that members are able to keep in touch with fellow professionals - to share experiences - and ideas about challenges that they face in their jobs, and this is particularly important for those new to the profession".
It was now the Chairmans aim to do what he could to aid and develop further that process during his term of office.
8.0 CLOSURE
The members were reminded of the next Branch event which was a social one - the Roger Midson Challenge Trophy. The Social Secretary, Jim McCraith, confirmed that it would be Ten Pin Bowling on Friday 17 May at 1330. Following it was the Day of Safety sponsored by DuPont at Murrayfield on 23rd May.
Other social events were also mentioned - Site Visit to the Millennium Wheel at Camelon (28th June) and the Secretarys Sipper Golf Outing (26th July). For additional information please contact the Secretary or log on to the website.
The Chairman commented on the departure of Chris White from the Branch Exec as Secretary and that he was now faced with what could only be described as a most pleasurable action despite being tinged with a hint of sadness in honouring one of our members.
He sometimes thought it wasnt really IOSH at all but was in fact CWIOSH =Chris Whites Institution of Occl Safety & Health. Chris appeared to have been The Branch for so long and had certainly been the backbone of this Branch for many years.
He was Vice-Chair of the Edinburgh District for 1 year - from 1981 to 1982
He was Chairman of the Edinburgh District for three years - from 1982 to 1985
He held the post of Secretary for the District in 1987 to 1988 then the District became the Edinburgh Branch and he has held the post of Secretary right from that first meeting of the Edinburgh Branch of IOSH back on 8th September 1988 until now - a period of 15 years (including the District service)
His input to Safety on a broader front was recognised in the year 2000, when his name was included in the Queens list and he subsequently went to Buckingham Palace to receive his MBE.
Richard was personally sad that Chris is dropping the mantle of Secretary just as he takes on the Chair and he would miss his guiding hand, but felt sure that Chris will still be involved in the Institutions wider activities & he will not disappear from the wider group of the Edinburgh Branch.
Richard then presented an engraved tray on which to safely transport the glasses containing articles & substance which could be considered hazardous to health
The Chairman thanked all for their attendance and contribution and bade them a safe journey homeward; then closed the Annual General Meeting.
