M.C. Escher Self Portrait
M.C. Escher is one of my favorite artists. He did many surrealistic drawings and what are known as "Tesselations." The background of this page is one of Escher's Tesselations called "Reptile" or some would say Lizard. A Tesselation is an arrangement of closed shapes that completely cover a plane without overlapping or leaving gaps.
Above is a 1943 lithograph by Escher entitled "Reptile." The lithograph shows the Tesselation on this page.
This is the hundred-year celebration of Escher's work, and there are a great many web sites dedicated to Escher. The official Dutch web site for Escher is at http://www.mcescher.nl since Escher was a Dutch artist. To go to the site,
