M.C. Escher  Self  Portrait
M.C. Escher is one of my favorite artists. He did many surrealistic drawings
and what are known as "Tesselations."  The background of this page is one of
Escher's Tesselations called "Reptile" or some would say Lizard. A Tesselation
is an arrangement of closed shapes that completely cover a plane without
overlapping or leaving gaps.
Above is a 1943 lithograph by Escher entitled "Reptile."
The lithograph shows the Tesselation on this page.
This is the hundred-year celebration of Escher's work, and there are a great
many web sites dedicated to Escher. The official Dutch web site for Escher is
at http://www.mcescher.nl since Escher was a Dutch artist. To go to the site,
just click on the link to the right.
At the site you can download a
a free interactive puzzle based on the work of Escher.
Another Escher site is http://www.iproject.com/escher/escher100.html Just
click on the link to the right.
This site will teach you how to make
your own Tesselations. There are also many Tesselation contests these days.
The World of Escher site is a place where you can buy Escher posters,
T shirts and puzzles. The site is http://www.worldofescher.com Just click
on the banner above or link to the right.
You can also download a free trial version of the TesselMania soft-
ware program that will allow you to experiment with Tesselations on
your computer. The link is hard to find on the site but it is http://www.
worldofescher.com/store/mania.html  To get the free download, just
